Character Counts Launch

In assembly this Friday, we will be launching ‘Character Counts’ for term 2 which is a programme for the term in which we focus on a character building trait in the assembly and this becomes the ‘focus of the week’. Character traits such as respect, caring for each other, honesty, good manners etc are important values and principles to develop and encourage among our pupils and in the school. This week’s focus will be ‘caring for others’ to coincide with caring for Moms on Mother’s Day. In the assembly Kelsey Mayhew, Megan and Carmen Howell, Katya Allen, and Amanda Bjorklund will be showing that they care for others by handing over the money raised by their initiative of selling cupcakes last term to the Chaeli Campaign for disadvantaged children – Chaeli will be attending the Assembly. Joshua Guenther will be showing that the Guenther family care by delivering a talk on their recent trip to assist an organisation called Compassion in Nicaragua. We will also then bring the idea of caring closer to home with Mother’s Day and caring within the school!

MOTHER’S DAY: To all the Mothers, we wish you a happy and special Mother’s Day on Sunday and hope your children spoil you with flowers and breakfast in bed!

SCHOOL GOVERNING BODY ELECTION: You should have received a notification letter last week. Nomination forms can be collected from Pat Readman. Camps Bay Primary’s SGB election will take place on Wednesday 27 May 2009 at 17h30 in the Bernie Segal Memorial Hall. Please diarise this date and make an effort to attend – it is an important election for the future of our school and we have to have a quorum of 15% of the parent body present for the election to take place.

ASCENSION DAY: Please take note that the Camps Bay Schools will be closed on Ascension Day 21 May 2009 this year. (Consult previous newsletter for further information)

WINTER SPORTS PROGRAMME: The winter sports programme should be fully operational and matches have already started. I attended under-11A and B Boys’ Soccer matches on the Camps Bay Club fields as well as the under-13A and B Boys’ Soccer matches on the Symmonds Field which all took place in the last week. We have received the match fixture lists for most of the sports offered and we will be compiling a comprehensive fixture list for all sports to be distributed to parents with next week’s newsletter for your planning and convenience. Please note that I have given the staff and coaches strict instructions that practices and matches may NOT to be cancelled. In the event of bad weather and rain Mrs Hamber (Head of Sport) and I will make a decision at second break whether or not to cancel practices, however, theory lessons until 15h00 will take place. Apart from theory lessons on rainy days, we would like to show sport videos and DVDs to pupils in place of theory lessons. If you have any sport videos and DVDs which you no longer use at home, please could you consider donating them to the school to show to the pupils. Matches are at times cancelled by the opposing teams but from our side Camps Bay Primary will NOT cancel matches. Please inform me if there are any irregularities to the above.

With respect to the upgrade and painting of the bathroom facilities, Mariella Hulme has kindly agreed to head this sub-committee. You will be receiving more information on the above fundraisers but if you would like to assist on any of these sub-committees and fundraisers, please contact the above-mentioned co-ordinators.

SCHOOL GOVERNING BODY PLANNING COMMITTEE
The School Governing Body have formed a Planning Committee to co-ordinate and prioritise projects for the school. The committee consists of Charles Thesen, Alten Hulme, Liesel Visagie and myself. There are a lot of projects that we would all like to do around the school but we need to look at the ‘bigger picture’ and prioritise. If you have any suggestions, please email a detailed proposal to Pat Readman who will then forward your suggestions to the Planning Committee for consideration. However, for 2009 the following projects have been identified:
Smartboards
Playground upgrade (benches, jungle gym, resurfacing)
Upgrade of bathroom and toilets
Furniture (desks)
Science Lab – has been completed with minimal costs
Grade 2 classroom for 2010

DONATE-A-BENCH: The trees have been planted on either side of the Netball court and we are ready to proceed with the next step to organise FOUR benches. Any family who would like to donate a bench and a family plaque will be placed on the bench. The cost of a concrete and wooden bench (same as public benches) is R2500-00. We only need THREE benches as the Grobler-Muller family have kindly donated the money to purchase the first bench. Thank you very much to the Grobler-Muller family for their generosity in getting this project off the ground. If there are any other families who are willing to assist, please contact me personally. More than one family are also more than welcome to make a joint donation of a bench.

LOST PROPERTY
Keanu Allan has kindly made herself available to revamp and reorganise the ‘Lost Property’ system at the school. I am sure you will be informed of procedures shortly.

SMS SYSTEM: We recently sent out a letter to establish which parent’s / guardian’s cell phone number to use as the point of contact for our sms service. If we have not received the reply slip back from you please note that we will be placing the mother of the child as the point of contact. Please contact the office should this not be the case with your child. Thank you.

FOUNDERS’ DAY: Founders’ Day is taking place on Friday 22 May 2009. Each school will be hosting a special Founders’ Day assembly. We would like to extend an invitation to all parent(s) and guardian(s) to join us in celebrating this special day in the history of our school. The times for the assemblies at each of the schools are indicated below.

CULTURAL:
CAMPS BAY SCHOOLS’ SOIREE – PERFORMANCE EVENING:
The Camps Bay Preparatory, Primary and High Schools will be combining their talent to stage a variety show to be held in the Camps Bay High school hall on Friday 22 May and Saturday 23 May. The cost for tickets on Friday will be R20 for children and R30 for adults. There will be a cash bar and tuck-shop available. On Saturday 23 May the ticket prices are R60 each and this includes platters of snacks and a cash bar will also be available. Both nights will start at 19:00 and should be over by 21:30 at the latest. Make sure you book in time to avoid disappointment. All booking may be done through Vivienne Ashcroft or our school office. Tickets are now available from Mrs Caldis. Come and support your school and see your teachers on stage!

FRIDAY 8 MAY 2009 – HAPPY HOUR IN THE LIBRARY: An invitation to all parents who want to help in the library with packing books, sticking on labels and covering books in plastic. This will take place directly after assembly on Friday morning.

MUSIC EVENING: We have found that with our increased number of music pupils the yearly recital has become long and cumbersome. We are experimenting this year with termly concerts. Our first concert will be on 27 May 2009 – More details will follow from Ms Attwell.
NOTES4NOTES BARN DANCE: Notes4Notes looks forward to hosting a Barn Dance on the last night of term, 25 June 2009. This is a real family event where the whole family can dance together and socially we can all get to know the school family. Diarise this date and watch out for details.

CHESS: We are looking for a chess enthusiast who will be willing to come and give tips of chess strategy to enthusiastic pupils once or twice a term. If you are interested, please contact the school office.

BALLET & CLASSICAL GREEK: We have another week of Eisteddfod. Lessons will continue as usual on Wednesday. Due to the fact that some children will be dancing in the finals on Friday – times not yet allocated – I will let you know on Wednesday which lessons will take place. The results so far have been wonderful but I shall wait until everyone has taken part before I give the full list. Good luck to all who are still to dance. SPORT:
U11 SOCCER:
The A team played the Deutsche Schule and lost 4-2. They were 3-0 down in first half but fought back with two exceptional goals scored by Thanduxolo Mtwa and Tristan Bell. Well done, boys!
The B team had a tough start to the season losing 7-0 to Llandudno, however, the boys played extremely courageously and must be commended for their sportsmanship.

U13 SOCCER:
The U13A played a brilliant match against visitors Tamboerskloof Primary School. Camps Bay Primary won 3-0. Goals were scored by Florent Remondi, Mujahid Londt and Dillon Pead. Well done!
U13B played against Llandudno, Camps Bay Primary won 2 – 1. Jamie Anders scored 2 goals, and it was his birthday! Well done, Jamie! Both teams displayed excellent sportsmanship and are very excited to start the season on such a positive note.

SWIMMING: All swimming (extra-mural and early morning) will start from Monday, 4 May 2009.

GENERAL:
HABITAT FOR HUMANITY: Camps Bay High school is about to launch an exciting new venture this year. By the end of the year we aim to raise R80 000 that will fund a Habitat for Humanity project. Habitat for Humanity is an organisation that builds homes for families in need. Our students will not only be raising the R80 000, but they will be helping with the build! We are very excited about launching this project but we do need some help. We encourage you as parents to get your children involved as much as possible as this is a great opportunity for them to be involved with our community. If you as parents would like to get involved, are able to donate money, have ideas for fundraising, or would like to know more information, please get in touch with the school. One of our first initiatives in order to collect money is to sell beautiful silk roses for Mothers’ Day at the 3 schools. The roses will be yellow, red, white and pink and will sell at a cost of R3 each. You can place your orders with Bursar, Mrs Caldis. Please support this initiative. Thank you.
WATERCOLOUR COURSE: I will be starting an eight-week watercolour course on Tuesday evening, 12 May. This course will explore the use of watercolours to express oneself both realistically and in abstract symbols.
This course is ideal for anyone longing to learn or simply to explore their creative side.

JUNGLE GYM COMPONENTS: We are appealing to anyone who has any Jungle Gym components that they are not using to please donate these to the school. We would like to use these components as part of the Jungle Gym which is on order. Please contact the office should you be able to assist us.

RECYCLING – greenOFFICE FUNDRAISING INITIATIVE: Please remember to support the greenOFFICE fundraising recycling initiative by bringing your empty ink and laser cartridges and putting them into the greenOFFICE recycling bins. One bin is located in the printing room and the other one outside the kitchen. We hope you will all support this initiative. Thank you.

MONDI RECYCLING: We have received R1969-41 from Mondi Recycling for February and March 2009. Thank you to all of you who contributed paper for recycling!
SATURDAY SOCCER: All parent(s) / guardian(s) and children are invited to partake in Saturday morning soccer at 9am on the promenade opposite Winchester Mansions.
