Interschools Sports

----------------------------------------------------------------
Dear Parent(s) / Guardian(s)
We have had a great two weeks. The Valentine’s Week and the Dance on Friday evening was great fun and the pupils had a wonderful time. The girls ‘dressed up to the nines’ while the boys stayed ‘cool’ in jeans and T-shirts!

On the Sports front, our athletes performed exceptionally well at the Inter-Schools Athletics hosted by Jan van Riebeeck at the high school field. I was able to attend the Athletics Day for 2 hours to support our athletes. Our athletes had minimal preparation but we have plans for next year to train and coach our athletes well in advance, starting in term 4. We also plan to take our Grades 5, 6 and 7s to the Inter-Schools as supporters next year in an effort to expand our involvement in this exciting event. Many of the other participating schools brought along their supporters and we are looking forward to showing them the Camps Bay Primary spirit next year! Names and results of our athletes who excelled and may have progressed to the next round of the Athletics Circuit Champs are listed below. Congratulations to all the athletes who participated – you made us proud! Thank you to Mrs Hamber and Mrs Weldon who organised and accompanied the athletes to the event.

INTER-HOUSE SWIMMING GALA:
No sooner have we finished organising one event and the next event is upon us. On Friday 27 February starting at 08:30 is the annual Inter-house gala. All pupils will be given the opportunity to swim and we look forward to seeing you there.

A reminder that children must come to school dressed in their swimming togs and PE uniforms. Costume, towel, swimming cap and tuck money are essential. All children participate in at least one event. Parents are welcome to support us and participate in the Moms’ and Dads’ Race if they would like to.

ACADEMIC: HOMEWORK
I have asked the teachers to draw-up a test and assignment/project timetable for Grades 4 to 7 for Term 1 which will be given to each pupil. Perhaps this should have been done earlier in the term but the plan is to issue these timetables at the start of each term in the future. In the discussion that ensued at the staff meeting, the following recommendations was made with regard to homework and the average time that each grade should be spending on homework per day. Please note that this does vary from time to time.
Grade 3:½ hour per day. Pupils must read out aloud to you daily.
Grade 4: 45 minutes per day
Grade 5: 1 hour per day
Grade 6: 1 ½ hours per day includes projects
Grade 7: 1 ½ hours per day
Music: Grades 3 to 5: 10 minutes or more practice per day
Grades 6 & 7: minimum of 30 minutes practice per day
Most teachers stated that pupils are given work in class and the homework often involves completion of this work. Projects need to be planned well in advance and teachers must give 2 – 3 weeks advance warning of major projects.

Inter-house Athletics

----------------------------------------------------------------
Dear Parent(s) / Guardian(s)

INTER-HOUSE ATHLETICS DAY: Friday 13 February
The school is gearing up for the Inter-house Athletics event that will be held on Friday 13 February 2009 at the Camps Bay High School fields starting promptly at 07:30 and finishing at 13:00. You should have received details in a specific Athletics Day letter that was sent home on Tuesday. A reminder to please ensure your child has a cap, water and applies sunscreen before leaving home in the morning. The weather forecast is favourable as it is predicted to be a cloudy day but hot reaching a temperature of 26۫C. Food will be on sale and water will be made available and we have arranged for a number of gazebos to be erected for shade and protection. All aftercare children will be transported back to the primary school by the high school bus after events are over. Please NO PARKING ON THE FIELD at the high school is permitted. We need to use the car-park or the ‘stop-and-drop’ parking below the school.

URGENT: The High School gazebos were damaged on their Athletics Day on Wednesday in the howling south-easter. Camps Bay Primary has purchased one gazebo of their own but we urgently require gazebos for use on the Inter-house Athletics Day. If you are able to assist with the loan of a gazebo for the day, please contact Mrs Pat Readman.

NO STEELBAND OR EXTRA-MURAL SWIMMING THIS FRIDAY: Due to the Inter-house Athletics Day on Friday there will be no Steelband or Extra-mural Swimming taking place as the children are being dismissed directly from the high school field at 13h00.

‘FAMILY TIME’ PROJECT and ASSEMBLY PRESENTATION: The ‘Family Time’ initiative that was meant to be launched on Friday 6 February 2009 in the Assembly has been postponed to after the Inter-House Athletics Day and the Valentine’s Week, however, in the Assembly slot we had the most wonderful presentation by Ms Roxanne Kemp, an Occupational Therapist, who last year went to the USA to achieve ‘her dream to swim with dolphins’ and in her professional capacity to assist physically and mentally impaired children to swim with dolphins as part of their therapy. It was an excellent presentation which the pupils thoroughly enjoyed.

MERITS / DEMERITS: Teachers issue many more merits than demerits. The demerit system is an effective line of communication to keep you informed. In most cases a demerit is issued after repeated warnings and I rely on the professionalism of the teachers with respect to the issuing of demerits and they have my support. I cannot entertain a discussion meeting on every demerit that is handed out in the school. The suggested approach would perhaps be, after 3 demerits, to speak to the Class Teacher. Three demerits will result in the child been placed in a detention. Perhaps after the second detention, you may want to engage with me on the way forward with respect to your child’s behaviour. I appreciate your support.

REMEDIAL TEACHER
We are fortunate to have a Remedial Teacher, namely, Mrs Wendy Hammond at our school to assist our pupils, however, the procedure for parents is to:
Firstly, draw the attention of the Class Teacher who will attempt to address the problem.
If the Class Teacher is unable to rectify the situation, THE CLASS TEACHER WILL REFER the child to the Academic Head or Remedial Teacher.
Please could you not make referrals directly to Mrs Hammond.

PROUDLY CAMPS BAY PRIMARY ART and WRITING COMPETITION – LAST CHANCE TO ENTER!!!
Thank you to those parents who have donated prizes, however, we still need more prizes. Some suggestions: CD voucher, movie tickets, Exclusive Books voucher, a slab of chocolate or packets of sweets. We need your child to be ‘Proudly Camps Bay Primary’! Closing date for submission of entries has been extended to Friday 20 February 2009.

NOTICE TO ALL GRADE 7s: All Grade 7 Parent (s) / Guardian(s) are invited to contact the Camps Bay High School Secretary, Mrs Sheryll Cosslett on 021 438 1507, should they wish to enquire about enrolling their child at Camps Bay High School in 2010. Please note there will be an Open Day on Thursday 26 February 2009 from 12:00 to 14:00.

GRADE 4 SOCIAL: The Grade 4 Social is due to take place on Friday 20 February at Maidens Cove from 5pm. Full details will follow! All Grade 4 parents to please book this date in your diaries now.
VALENTINE’S WEEK: MONDAY 16 TO FRIDAY 20 FEBRUARY 2009
There are a number of exciting events taking place during Valentine’s week such as:
Roses are available and learners can order these from their teachers at a cost of R5.00.
‘Guess how many sweets in the jar?’ raffle in Ms Sobey’s classroom, each entry costs R1.
Writing competition – pupils are invited to enter the writing competition and write a love poem and/or a story of no more than 250 words, the entries must be decorated and will be displayed around the school, each entry costs R1.
Letters – each morning the Grade 7 committee members will come around with a box and collect any letters that learners may want to send to one another, these will be handed out on Friday 20 February.
‘Red and White’ Civvies Day - on Friday 20 February 2009 there will be a “Red and White” civvies day. To participate in this day, learners must wear red and white clothing to school and pay R5 directly to their class teacher. Half of the civvies day money raised will be donated to the SPCA.
Valentine’s Dance - the week culminates with the Valentines Dance which takes place in the school hall from 18:30 – 22:00. All Grade 6, 7 and Grade 8 pupils from Camps Bay High are invited to attend the dance. Proudly Camps Bay Competition

----------------------------------------------------------------

Dear Parent(s) / Guardian(s)

An exciting two weeks lies ahead with the Inter-House Athletics Meeting taking place on Friday 13 February followed by the Valentine’s Week from 16 – 20 February 2009.

We will also be launching a new initiative this Friday in the Assembly slot called ‘Family Time’ in which the school will be divided into ‘families’ consisting of a Grade 7 pupil as the head of the family, a grade 6, a grade 5, a grade 4 and a grade 3 pupil comprising the ‘family’. The aim of this initiative is to promote friendly interaction and closer co-operation across the grades. The ‘families’ will meet once a term, under the guidance of a teacher, to discuss various topics such as bullying, what warrants a demerit and other pertinent issues.

PROUDLY CAMPS BAY PRIMARY ART and WRITING COMPETITION
Thank you to those parents who have donated prizes, however, we still need many more prizes. Some suggestions: CD voucher, movie tickets, Exclusive Books voucher, a slab of chocolate or packets of sweets. We need your child to be ‘Proudly Camps Bay Primary’! Closing date for submission of entries is Friday 13 February 2009.

INTER-HOUSE ATHLETICS: FRIDAY 13 FEBRUARY 2009
You should have received two comprehensive documents from Mrs Hamber explaining in detail the arrangements for the Inter-House Athletics that will be held at the high school track on Friday 13 February 2009. Please consult these documents closely. A further reminder of the Inter-House Athletics Practice which will also be held at the high school on this Friday 6 February 2009 from 13:30 – 15:30. All athletes MUST attend and all the staff will also be present. Please arrange transport for your child to the high school as well as arrange to collect your child from the high school at 15:30. The plan of this practice is to familiarise the athletes with various procedures such as running in lanes and to have a trial run of their respective events before the ‘big day’! We will also be holding the High Jump and Long Jump events on this Friday afternoon 6 February 2009.

VALENTINE’S WEEK: MONDAY 16 TO FRIDAY 20 FEBRUARY 2009
This new event is causing great excitement in the school and lots of rumours!
Information will be given, on all the planned events for this week, to the pupils on Friday in the Assembly slot by the teachers who are organising this week, namely, Ms Sobey, Ms Jensen and Ms Adams. As a start the Valentine’s Dance is for Grade 6s and Grade 7s as well as the Grade 8s from the high school only. Dress is CASUAL and entrance tickets are R10 for a single ticket. (No double tickets)

SCHOOL GOVERNING BODY
The School Governing Body had their first official meeting on Wednesday 4 February 2009 and a number of important decisions were made. Information and feedback will be provided to you in the next newsletter. Included will be the identification of the various Grade projects according to the needs of the school. Each grade will be allocated a project to achieve before the end of the year. For your information, the lines on the Tennis Courts (next to the Symmonds field) have been repainted and the nets have also been repaired.

DONATE-A-TREE PROJECT
We are planning to create an atrium with trees and benches on either side of the Netball court. At present we have Cape Ash trees lining one side of the court. We need six Cape Ash trees, but they have to be 3 metre trees to prevent them been blown away by the south-easter wind. The cost of a 3m Cape Ash tree is R600 per tree. Any ‘tree-hugging’ parent who would like to donate a tree, please contact Mrs Noleen Knott at 021- 438 3112. Two trees have already been donated by Mrs Noleen Knott and an anonymous donor respectively. We, therefore, effectively only need another FOUR trees to be donated.

EXTRA-MURALS:
Teachers in charge of the extramural meet the children at a set venue (like their classroom or outside the school entrance nearest the kitchen) where they take the register before leaving together for the main venue.
For all extra-murals that take place on the Symmonds Field the children will be walked to and from the fields by the teacher-in-charge of the practice. PLEASE DO NOT LIFT YOUR CHILD TO AND FROM THE FIELDS. This creates a lot of confusion for the child and the teacher who takes the register before they leave for the field. We would also prefer you not to collect your child from the Symmonds Field because in the event you are late, we cannot leave any child alone waiting for you to arrive and we cannot delay the rest of the team who are going to be collected back at school.
In the event of any changes of venue we always try to notify parents via the answering service on the secretary’s phone. An appeal to you to please ensure that your child wears the school cap and applies sunscreen at each practice.

SUPERVISED HOMEWORK SESSIONS
We often find that pupils do not have the necessary self-discipline and work ethic to do their homework and at times, as working parents, it is difficult for parents to closely monitor and assist with homework. Mrs Maureen Karakondis has kindly offered her services to the school to run homework classes from Monday to Thursday afternoons from 14:30 – 16:00 at a cost of R200.00 per pupil per month. Mrs Karakondis will supervise and assist your child with their homework. Homework supervision classes will take place in the following venues: Mondays and Wednesdays in the classroom opposite the kitchen and on Tuesdays and Thursdays in the Kumon Room. If you would like to register your child for these supervised homework classes, please contact Mrs Karakondis directly on 083 570 5322.
