Inter-Schools Gala

Dear Parent(s) / Guardian(s)

With the Inter-House Athletics, Inter-Schools Athletics, Valentine’s Week and the Inter-House Gala all behind us, I am pleased that we are settling down to more of an academic focus. At most schools this hectic start is not unusual and schools aim to get these big events completed early in Term 1 to facilitate an academic focus.

You may have read a rather controversial article in the Sunday Times dated 21 February 2010 entitled ‘Ditch Homework’ – I have attached an extract from the article for you to read. While the US expert Alfie Kohn does have an interesting argument - I am not sure I agree that homework should be ‘ditched’. However, children in primary school should not be burdened with excessive amounts of homework. They need time to exercise and play sport, read, spend quality time socialising with parents and friends and just have fun as children!
There is a place for homework in moderation:
Homework is an important consolidation tool, particularly for subjects like Mathematics/Numeracy and Reading.

I have never subscribed to big research projects, very often plagiarised, that take hours of time at home and which very often become a ‘family’ project – it is far more beneficial for the child to do the assignment in class and it also gives a more accurate reflection of the child’s capabilities.

Homework needs to be constructive and diagnostic.

Homework must be recorded in the diary and there should be a set time for homework daily.

This helps children improve their organisational skills and time management.

Homework can be an opportunity for parents to be involved in their children’s education.

The WCED has in fact urged parents to ensure that children practise Maths and English. This is part of the rolling out of a poster campaign asking parents: “Did your child read, write and practise Maths today?”
Suggested daily homework times for the various grades are as follows:
Foundation Phase:
Grades 1 & 2: 15 minutes
Grade 3: 20 minutes

Intermediate Phase:
Grade 4: 30 minutes
Grade 5 & 6: 45 minutes

Senior Phase:
Grade 7: 60 minutes

Please be aware that often homework in excess of the time guidelines above is often work that was not completed in class and the child is then required to complete the unfinished work at home. Apart from Grade 7’s, the teachers try to avoid giving homework over weekends.

INTER-HOUSE GALA:
We had a wonderful Inter-House Gala last week Friday. We will be handing out the certificates and trophies for the Inter-house Gala in the Assembly on Friday. Parents are welcome to attend.
The final results of the Inter-House Gala were as follows:

1st - Orange House
2nd - Blue House
3rd - Purple House

Well done to all the participants and swimmers – you are stars! Thank you to Mrs Wendy Way, Mrs Julie Friedman, Ms Wendy Paarman, parents and teachers who assisted as officials. Special thanks to Mrs Hamber and Mrs Swart who were the main organisers of the gala – this is a huge event to organise and particularly to co-ordinate for all children to participate. Well done! Thank you to the Camps Bay Parents (CBP’s) for running the tuckshop at the gala and organising the delicious pizzas!

SPORT: WELL DONE!
Swimming: Well done to Gadi Friedman who has been selected to represent the Western Province Swimming Team. Congratulations, Gadi
Athletics: Congratulations to the following athletes who competed at the District Champs and have now been selected to compete at the final Western Province Athletics Trials: Moki Mtwa, Alice Pillar and Zoë Gadeyne.
Moki won the gold medal in the U12 high jump – an outstanding achievement!
Congratulations to all of you – we are very proud of your achievements.

ROAD SAFETY:
Thank you for your support – the procedures implemented, as an interim measure, below have improved the traffic congestion and safety of our children on arrival at school in the mornings

The ADT Guard at the gate assisting with road safety in the mornings.

Orange beacons will be placed outside the main entrance gate in the road to prevent vehicles from stopping in front of this gate as it serves as the entrance for children to the Netball court in the mornings. There is a “no parking” sign on the gate!

Orange beacons will be placed along the curb (adjacent to the Netball court) that will designate a STOP-AND-DROP ZONE. Please use this area as a stop-and-drop zone ONLY. The ADT Guard will assist to ensure that this area is used for this purpose only.

Children that are dropped off on the opposite side of the road must walk to the beacons opposite the entrance gate from which the ADT Guard will assist them in crossing the road.

DITCH HOMEWORK!
A US expert sparks controversy by saying it damages younger children
By Suthentira Govender

Homework for primary school pupils is unnecessary, debilitating and risks putting a child off learning for good. And it's stressful for parents. These views, expressed by US author and parenting expert Alfie Kohn in his book The Homework Myth: Why Our Kids Get Too Much of a Bad Thing, have sparked local and international debate. In South Africa, children from Grade 1 to 7 are given homework in subjects like literacy, numeracy and life orientation.

In an audio clip on his website, Kohn says that virtually no research supported the claim that homework was good. And Professor Jonathan Jansen, a leading education expert and the vice- chancellor of the University of Free State, agrees. "I believe that homework is unnecessary in the lower grades, but managed carefully, can be a positive way of extending and enriching classroom learning in the higher grades," Jansen said. "Schools seldom co-ordinate homework tasks across the subject areas - with the result that young people are stressed with too much to do in a grade." He said "good teaching within the school periods" could offer an alternative to homework in primary school.

Clinical psychologist Sinette van Rooy Booysen said homework could lead to conflict between parents and children. "Homework is then seen in a negative light and will create a daily 'battlefield' between child and parent," she said.

Road Safety

Dear Parent(s) / Guardian(s)

Last week Camps Bay Primary had a wonderful Valentine’s Week full of love, roses and chocolates! The week culminated with an exciting Assembly. Mr Collier dressed in Mandela outfit and mask entered the hall and presented a talk on Mr Mandela linking it to the fact that the 11 February marked the 20 year anniversary of Mr Mandela’s release from prison in 1990. Three points were emphasised and explained to the children to learn from Madiba:

Standing up for what is right even if it is hard: prepared to give up his life and 27 years imprisonment in the struggle for freedom and equality

His willingness to forgive

His humility and caring nature for others

On a lighter note, a boy from each class presented the lady teachers with a rose in the Assembly and the highlight was the love game of ‘Cupid’ played by Mr Rycroft and three lady teachers!

ROAD SAFETY: There have been a number of near incidents when children are being dropped off for school, particularly in the mornings and a number of parents have expressed their concern. Please could I ask you to be very careful when dropping off your child in the mornings. We will be presenting a road safety and instruction talk to the children in next week’s Assembly.
A group of parents have been investigating the road safety of the area around the school and are presently engaging with the Council, Municipality and Traffic Department, but it is a painfully slow process!

However, as an interim measure the following procedure will be implemented as of Monday 22 February 2010 and I appeal to you to support these measures:
The ADT Guard at the gate will assist with road safety in the mornings

Orange beacons will be placed outside the main entrance gate in the road to prevent vehicles from stopping in front of this gate as it serves as the entrance for children to the Netball court in the mornings. There is a no parking sign on the gate!

Please could you ‘stop-and-drop your child off in the mornings rather than parking and accompanying your child on to the school grounds. This will alleviate congestion.

This a trial interim measure which may be subject to review but please assist us in the interests and safety of all our children. Thank you for your support.

INTER-HOUSE GALA: Friday 19 February 2010
Tomorrow is our Inter-House Gala from 08h00 to 13h00. This is a great event in which all children are given the opportunity to participate and swim. It will be held in our wonderful indoor pool. Thank you to all the parents who assisted with the tuckshop and the braaing. It was the first time that Camps Bay Primary has hosted the Inter-Schools Athletics and the event was a great success. There were some minor teething problems that we will rectify for next year. However, all participating schools have congratulated us and thanked us for a successful and special day. Thank you to Mrs Hamber and Mrs Weldon who were the chief organisers of this big event as well as to all the teachers and parents who gave up their Saturday morning to officiate at the event. Inter-Schools Athletics

Dear Parent(s) / Guardian(s)

INTER-HOUSE ATHLETICS:
The Inter-House Athletics event on Monday was a great success and the postponement worked out well as the event took place on a cloudy and wind-free morning! It was a wonderful day full of spirit – the House Captains and cheerleaders presented excellent routines. There were also some excellent performances on the track by the athletes. One of the highlights of the day was our new podium (thanks to the Friedman family) on which the top three placed athletes in each event were congratulated. Well done to all the participants – you are all winners! Thank you to Mrs Hamber and Mrs Weldon who were the main organisers of the event. Thank you to all the teachers, staff and parents who officiated and also thank you to the Camps Bay Parents (CBP) for providing the tuckshop facility.
The final House points were as follows:
1. Orange House 452 points
2. Purple House 390 points
3. Blue House 333 points

INTER-SCHOOLS ATHLETICS:
The school is gearing up for the Inter-Schools Athletics event that is being held on Saturday 6 February 2010 at the high school fields from 08h30 to 13h00. Please come along and support even if it is for part of the morning. Camps Bay Primary is hosting the event and the other schools participating are Jan van Riebeeck, Tamboerskloof Primary, Reddam and Sea Point Primary. We would like as many Camps Bay Primary pupils present as possible as supporters. Our House Captains will be there to lead the cheerleading to show the other schools the spirit that we have at Camps Bay Primary! Pupils, athletes and spectators, must wear Physical Education clothes and trainers (‘takkies’) that will be more comfortable.
This is a huge event to organise so please any parents who would like to assist with timekeeping and officiating, please contact Mrs Hamber. The tuckshop will be in operation and boerewors rolls will be on sale.

VALENTINE’S WEEK:
Next week is Valentine’s Week at the school and the committee of teachers have some exciting and romantic events planned which they will launch in the Assembly on Friday morning. I have been given ‘strict instructions’ not to divulge information before the assembly, however, a flyer will be sent home on Monday explaining all the events for next week. The week will culminate with the Valentine’s Dance for the Grade 6’s and 7’s. The Grade 8’s who were at Camps Bay Primary last year will also be invited to attend.

COLIN SUNKEL INDIVIDUAL PHOTOGRAPHS: Each child has received an envelope from Colin Sunkel Photography with today’s newsletter. Should you wish your child to be photographed kindly complete the required details on the envelope and send it to school by next Thursday, 12 February together with the correct amount of money. Please note if we do not receive the envelope back your child will not be photographed on 16 February.

GRADES 1 and 2: Circle Sports Day and School Picnic: Our Grade 1’s and 2’s will be joining the Preparatory School for the exciting Circle Sports and Picnic on Friday 5 March 2010. Please diarise this date as this IS A MUST EVENT for our Grade 1’s and 2’s. Thank you to Mrs Roussopoulos and the Preparatory School for including us in this exciting event. Further information will follow at a later date.

GENERAL:
LIBRARY NEWS: The library has been completely refurbished. It has been repainted, has a soft wall-to-wall carpet, new shelving and couches, cushions, beanbags, ottomans and a warm rug in greens, yellows and oranges. It is now a very welcoming space and the children love it. On behalf of the Camps Bay Primary ‘family’ I would like to say a special thanks to Susie Joubert who has driven this project to upgrade our library and make it a special place in our school. Camps Bay Primary is proud to have one of the best primary school libraries in the country. We invite parents to pop in and see it for themselves.

CAMPS BAY PARENTS (CBP): (ex-PTA)
We need you! Camps Bay Primary needs the involvement of our parents to make our school a success. Plans on the agenda is a tuckshop on Fridays selling healthy foods, a second-hand clothing shop and raising funds for a piece of the playground to be covered with astro-turf grass!! Please get involved and support our Camps Bay Parents (CBPs).

Start by offering to assist at the tuckshop at Inter-Schools Athletics on Saturday morning. Dads are also needed to help with the braaing of the boerewors for the boerewors rolls. Join the ‘Camps Bay family’ and make a difference!

To provide feedback on money raised last year, new desks for both grade 4 classes were purchased and solar shielding was placed on the windows of the grades 6 and 7 classrooms to reduce the heat in these venues and improve the comfort of the learning environment for the pupils and teachers. Desks for the grade 5 classes are still under discussion by the Planning Committee of the SGB to ensure that we purchase the correct type of desks.

MESSAGES FROM THE CBP's:
Thanks to all parents who worked like trojans at our hotdog and tuckshop stand. Look forward to seeing all parents at the Inter-Schools Athletics Day on Saturday.

We are looking for big plastic containers to hold drinks and ice at our functions. Please check your garages! Carol 07220026091

Inter-House Athletics

Dear Parent(s) / Guardian(s)

We had a wonderful talk in the Assembly on Friday by Mr Achmat Hassiem on his encounter with a shark in 2006 as a lifeguard on Muizenberg beach. He lost his leg in the shark attack but he relates his setback into an event that has changed his life in a positive way. The children were completely engrossed in his story for an hour. He represented the South African swimming team in the Para-Olympics in Beijing in 2008 and he is now a public speaker in demand. Please ask your child about this amazing talk?

INTER-HOUSE ATHLETICS:

THE INTER-HOUSE ATHLETICS HAS BEEN POSTPONED TO MONDAY 1 FEBRUARY 2010 and will still be held on the Camps Bay High School field. The weather forecast for tomorrow is the same as today with a howling south-easterIy wind which makes it an extremely unpleasant day for all concerned. I personally went up to the high school today to do an inspection of the conditions and the wind will make it impossible to run an Inter-House Athletics Day. We will also not be able to put up gazebos for protection for the children from the sun. The weather forecast for Monday 1 February is cloudy with a moderate south-westerly wind which will make for a pleasant and enjoyable day. Keep your fingers crossed!

Tomorrow, Friday 29 February 2010 will be a normal academic school day closing at the normal school time on Friday at 13h00. Children must come to school in school uniform and bring books to school.

Enclosed with this newsletter is a letter and a programme from Mrs Hamber explaining the arrangements for the Inter-House Athletics. A reminder to please ensure that your child has a cap, water and applies sunscreen before leaving home in the morning. Food (hot-dogs) will be on sale and water will be available. We have arranged for a number of gazebos to be erected for shade and protection. Please a request from the high school: NO PARKING ON THE FIELD at the high school is permitted. Please could you use the car-park or ‘stop-and-drop’ parking area below the school

HIGH JUMP and LONG JUMP FINALS:
The Finals for these events in the U10, U11 and U12 boys and girls age-groups scheduled for this afternoon (Thursday) have unfortunately also been postponed to next week due to the wind. It is not safe to run high jump events in this level of wind as the mats lift off the ground. Further information on these events will follow next week.

RELAY PRACTICE:
We will run relay practices tomorrow, Friday 29 January 2010 on the Symmonds Field from 13h00 to 14h00 for those children that have been selected to run in the relay events.

AFTERCARE-INTER-HOUSE ATHLETICS: Kindly note that arrangements have been made to transport the aftercare children back to the primary school. Should your child not be attending aftercare on Monday afternoon, please notify Elaine beforehand by calling her on 082 720 7705.

GRADES 1 and 2: Circle Sports Day and School Picnic
Our Grade 1’s and 2’s will not be participating in the Inter-House Athletics but will be joining the Preparatory School for the exciting Circle Sports and Picnic on Friday 5 March 2010. Please diarise this date as this IS A MUST EVENT for our Grade 1’s and 2’s. Thank you to Mrs Roussopoulos and the Preparatory School for including us in this exciting event. Further information will follow at a later date.

WELL DONE: Gadi Friedman (Grade 4) who competed in the Jack Currie Championships this past weekend and swam in the U12 age division even though he is only 9 years old! He did extremely well and won a Silver medal in the 400m freestyle, a Gold medal in the 200m freestyle and another Silver medal for the 100m freestyle. He also swam his personal best time of 1 minute 13 seconds for 100m freestyle! Well done, Gadi - we are proud of you!

EXTRA-MURALS:
Teachers in charge of the extra-mural meet the children at a set venue (like their classroom or outside the school entrance nearest the kitchen) where they take the register before leaving together for the main venue.

For all extra-murals that take place on the Symmonds Field the children will be walked to and from the fields by the teacher-in-charge of the practice. PLEASE DO NOT LIFT YOUR CHILD TO AND FROM THE FIELDS. This creates a lot of confusion for the child and the teacher who takes the register before they leave for the field. We would also prefer you not to collect your child from the Symmonds Field because in the event you are late, we cannot leave any child alone waiting for you to arrive and we cannot delay the rest of the team who are going to be collected back at school.

Camps Bay Primary has a policy of ‘no cancellation’ of sport or matches unless rain or extremely strong wind. Mrs Hamber and I make a decision at second break and in the event of any cancellations or changes of venue we always try to notify parents via the sms service at second break 12h30 – 13h00. However, sometimes opposing schools cancel matches at the last minute and we can only inform you as soon as we are notified which sometimes is towards the end of the day.

An appeal to you to please ensure that your child wears the school cap and applies sunscreen at each practice.

CULTURAL:
RAD BALLET AND CLASSICAL GREEK: Lessons have commenced. Just a reminder that a full term’s notice or a term’s fee in lieu thereof is required when terminating lessons – as per contract reminders in last term’s newsletter. We look forward to seeing you all on Wednesdays or Fridays. Mrs G and Lisl.

STEELBAND: Please note there will be Steelband tomorrow as per normal.

We invite parents to pop in and see it for themselves. The final order of books from the 2009 Read-a-thon has arrived. This brings the total of new books bought last year to 350. A list of the latest books is attached to this newsletter – children will be able to take them out from next week.

GRADE SOCIALS: For the past few years every grade has organised a family ‘get-together’ in the first term, usually in the form of a picnic at a public place (Clifton is very popular). In the past, the PTA assigned specific dates, but as this is such a busy term it was felt best to leave it to parents to organise their own grade event and time, should they wish to organise a grade social. The teachers would be happy to assist by allowing notices to be stuck in homework diaries.

OPEN DAY AT CBHS for GRADE 7’s: Please diarise this date: Camps Bay High School's Open Day will be held on Wednesday, 17 February 2010, from 12h00 to 14h00. Parents are most welcome to attend.

ICE LOLLIES FOR SALE: Icel lollies will be on sale every Friday at break at a cost of R2.00 to raise funds for the Grade 7 Farewell.

CAMPS BAY PARENTS (CBP): Reminder CBP's - Thank you to everyone who came to our 1st CBP meeting. We look forward to seeing everyone at the athletics on Monday, we need you to come and help, lots of hotdogs/tuckshop/drinks to sell! We would also like to say thank you to all parents who have already handed in their R200. All parents who need to still do so, kindly send to school in an envelope marked “FAO: Bursar’’. Many thanks, Carol and Julie CBP’S

LIFTING ARRANGEMENTS / PRIVATE MESSAGES: We would like to remind parents that pupils may purchase phone cards for their private phone calls as these cannot be made on the school telephones. Parents, please also remember that it is not convenient for the secretary’s office to convey lifting arrangement messages and private messages to pupils which could have been made before arriving at school, we will of course make an exception in cases of emergency.

WEBSITE: We are in the process of redesigning our website. Should you not wish to have pictures of your children published on the website, kindly notify the office by email at office@campsbayprimary.co.za.

CHEST FREEZER: Does anyone have a chest freezer that they can donate to the school? Please check your garage! Carol 0722002691

UCT RAG: 4th February UCT RAG presents Cape Town’s most notorious magazine. The SAX Appeal will be sold all over the streets of Cape Town. Please support this 77 year old tradition with a R20 donation for the magazine, all in the name of raising funds for SHAWCO, a dynamic and innovative student-run NGO.
