CAMPS BAY NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH: The Camps Bay Neighbourhood Watch has been working hard at fighting crime in our community. To those of you who are remaining at home during the festive season, here are some tips from the Chairman of the Camps Bay Neighbourhood Watch:
Close all windows and doors (lock) while at home (especially in the early evening).
Be aware of anyone in the area (stranger) who is acting suspiciously.
At night, set all alarms in the house.
As an early warning consider installing perimeter alarms.
Report anything to the police or local neighbourhood watch immediately.
6. Useful numbers to have on hand and set as speed dial on your cell phone are the numbers of SAPS in your area as well as your security company’s number.

The Camps Bay Watch is represented by the residents of Camps Bay who have chosen to play a role in reducing crime in our neighbourhood. They work closely with SAPS and also have a number of their own crime fighting initiative on the go, at any one time. The front end of the organisation are the patrollers who drive around the neighbourhood acting as additional eyes and ears for the SAPS at all hours of the day and night. There is an ongoing drive to ensure that patrollers have sufficient kit and equipment to keep them safe and to ensure that they can conduct their task properly. Funds are purely donations from residents and we appeal to you to assist us in this regard. No donation is too small and all money received will be put to good practical use. Our banking details are as follows:
Account Name: Camps Bay Community Police Forum ABSA Sea Point
Savings Account Number: 918 021 5097
Reference: CBW (your name/and sector, if appropriate) You can just state the street that you live in if you do not know your sector. Please email Sally Merrington with deposit details at sally.merrington@campsbaywatch.org so that your deposit can be tracked and the necessary admin completed. Thank you for your support.

In closing, we would like to wish those families that are celebrating, a very happy and blessed Christmas and Channukah and a peaceful and restful holiday to all. May you all enjoy good health and remain safe, enjoying quality time with your loved ones.

The final exams for 2008 are underway. We wish all our pupils good luck during this time. Please remember that there are no school extra-murals for the remainder of the term, however private extra-murals will continue as agreed with your extra-mural teacher. TEXT BOOKS FOR 2009: A number of parents were unfortunately unable to attend the text book sale yesterday. Should you still need to order your books you may do so by collecting an order form from the Secretary’s office. This form needs to be completed in full and returned with the necessary cash or cheque (made out in favour of Books 24/7) to the Bursar’s office by 1 December at the latest. Please note the order will not be processed until it has been paid for in full. Once the order is placed Books 24/7 will deliver it directly to the school for you to collect in the new year.

SECOND HAND TEXT BOOKS FOR GRADE 7 2009: The Grade 7’s will be selling their Afrikaans Spud and Myths and Legends books by private arrangement. Should you wish to buy them second hand they will cost approximately R150 for all three books.

SECOND HAND BOOKS: There will be no second hand book sale held at the school this year, due to the fact that the school is introducing new Natural Science, Social Science, Economic and Management Sciences and Mathematics text books. Exams are starting!

----------------------------------------------------------------

EXAMS STARTING
Our final exams start next Monday 17 November. Parents are notified that school will be closing at 13h00 from Monday 18 November until Thursday 4 December and at 11h00 on 5 December, the final day of the 4th term. We trust that all of you are busy revising and studying and we wish you all good luck! Below are some pointers to help you through this stressful and important period:
1. Prepare an exam/revision timetable and stick to it.
2. Make sure you know exactly what to learn.
3. Aim to understand the material you study not just to memorise it.
4. Take effective study breaks planned and limited.
5. Remember to get enough sleep.
6. Prepare all the resources you will need for the exam e.g. pens, pencils, calculators,
erasers, etc.
7. Remember to eat a well balanced breakfast on the day of the exam so that you are focusing on your exam paper and not on your empty tummy.
8. When you get the exam paper on the day of the exam read through all the questions. If you do not understand any of the instructions please ask the teacher in charge of the exam.
9. Write all your answers clearly and neatly.
10. Once you have completed your paper if you have any spare time read through all of your answers.

Please note that a letter detailing the cost of the books, etc will be sent out next Monday, 10 November together with the Walton’s stationary booklet. Please note this is the only day on which books will be sold. There will be NO other opportunity organized by the school
to purchase your child’s text books for next year.

SENIOR GRADE PLAYS
Below please find a short synopsis of what each of the plays are about so join us for some fun on Thursday 6 November at 7pm. Ticket Prices: R15 for Adults and R5 for children. Tickets are available at the Bursar’s office – buy your tickets now to avoid having to queue at the door to pay! Chips and Cooldrinks will be on sale during intermission.

• A HAIRY TALE
Entertaining a bored king is hard work especially when Cinderlocks is having a bad hair day, the Big Bad Wolf is about to elope with Red Riding Hood and Jack sells his cow after a serious night out at the pub. In a Hairy Tale we meet all our favourite fairy tale characters in a refreshingly new context.

• TV OR NOT TV
TV is a wonderful invention in many ways. Overuse can be mind numbing. The moral of this story is: READ! READ! READ!

• THE SEARCH FOR THE BOOK OF KNOWLEDGE
The Sacred book of Knowledge has been stolen from the Hauputchi People. This book is the book by which the Hauputchi live and without it they are lost. Six brave men are called upon to venture off on a dangerous quest in an attempt to retrieve the beloved book, this will not be an easy feat and many perils await them, will they be successful?

• PROUDLY SOUTH AFRICAN
This is a play about a news reporter who focuses on all the negativity in our country and therefore wants to pack up and leave. While he is packing up, he is visited by four ghosts who take him on a journey to discover South Africa’s past, present and future in order to convince
him to stay.

Our new desks have arrived!

----------------------------------------------------------------

PHOTOSHOOT AT MAIDEN'S COVE

On Friday, 17 October the photograph for the 2009 magazine will be taking place at Maiden’s Cove. Below please find the procedure for the morning:
1. All parents are requested to drop their child at Maiden’s Cove parking area (parking area close to La Med).
2. Teachers will be there at 7:30 am to meet all learners. Please do not leave your child if there are no members of the Camps Bay Primary staff present.
3. All learners should report to their class teacher where their name will be ticked off on a class list.
4. If your child is going to be absent, please inform the teacher by Thursday in writing.
5. After the photograph all children will be transported back to school.
The school programme will continue as normal with school ending at 13:00.

NEW DESKS HAVE ARRIVED
There was a lot of excitement in the Grade 3 classrooms this week as they received their new desks and chair backs! A big thank you must go out to Ms Nikolova, mother of Gabriella Tucheva who made all the chair bags for us. As you can see from the picture below the classes look completely revamped!

NITS & LICE STRIKE AGAIN

Regrettably head lice and nits have invaded us again. It is Departmental Policy, as well as School Policy that children who are found to have hair lice and / or nits are required to go home immediately, only returning to school when they are clear. This usually takes about 2-3 days. I know that this is often extremely inconvenient, but as lice / nits is so very easily spread, we have to insist that this be strictly adhered to. Please check your child's head! We are aware that this is a problem not unique to our school – many schools in the Western Cape are struggling. Please help us – we ask that every child’s head be checked TODAY. It is also essential that older or younger siblings who are not at our school be checked regularly. We are determined to gain control of this situation, but can only do so with your support and co-operation.

Inter-house cross country

Dear Parent(s) / Guardian(s)

INTERHOUSE CROSS COUNTRY
What a beautiful day we had for the Inter-house cross country. There were blue skies, the sun was shining and there was not even a breath of wind! The children were eager to start the event and although some found it a lot easier than others, a good time was had by all.

The Junior Boys eager to get off to a good start!

From left to right: Allegra Nassif, Ella McCarthy-Page, Jemma Cook and Gemma Hartog.

The winners of the various age groups will be announced in the final assembly to be held next Friday, 26 September 2008. A special word of thanks must be given to Greg and Anneke Bright. Their help and assistance proved invaluable to me on the day. Many thanks to the following parents, who marshalled on the route, handed out water sachets and assisted at the finish: Di Pelman, Helen Phillips, Ashraf Abrahams, Nicky Harper, Carol Bysshe, Jenny Meek, Anita Murray, Colleen Burgess, Nike Romano, Hanna and Richard Bjorklund, Malcom Britton and Noleen Knott. The Grade 7’s raised R126 through sponsorship. This idea was spearheaded by Luke Cassar – well done Luke for showing such initiative!

Dear Parent(s) / Guardian(s)

We have two more weeks left until the end of the third term and it is going to be a very busy time at Camps Bay Primary. Forthcoming events to look forward to include: our Interschools Cross Country, Annual Music Recital, Market Day, 3 Schools Cross Country and Bandana Day! Let’s put our school spirit to the test and enjoy each of these fabulous events.

To access the newsletter on the website please click on the “NEWS” tab at the top of the web page. The website will also feature a Newsletter Archive which will enable you to access past newsletters. Each child will still receive a printed copy of the newsletter and any additional letters/flyers to take home.

CASUAL DAY
This past Friday we had a casual day in aid of Fountain House and raised R750-00. A big thank you goes out to all who supported casual day and this worthy cause.

BOOK PEOPLE BOOK SALE
On Thursday last week The Book People hosted a book sale in The Bernard F. Segal Memorial Hall at Camps Bay Primary. Both the children and parents who attended enjoyed viewing the different books and purchasing their favourite ones! The school earned 10% back in cash of the total value of the sales and 5% of the total value of the sales back in books which were donated to the school. We will be utilising the funds earned to purchase some new fictional books for the school library.

GRADE 5 SNACK SALE
Last Friday the Grade 5’s hosted a snack sale and raised a whopping R1550! A big thank you to all the parents who sent in yummy treats to be sold and to those who assisted with the sale.

GRADE 7 FUNDRAISER
Many thanks to Brenda and Mik Liltved and their incredibly enthusiastic team of Grade 7 parents for organising Friday night’s evening of music and dance at the Camps Bay Football Club. It was a fantastic evening enjoyed by young and old alike. Mik’s band, “Don’t Call Us” rocked the socks off our feet. It was very well attended and a huge thank you to all the friends and families of our local community who supported this event. An amount of R8500.00 was raised. WOW!

PHONE CALLS
We appeal to all parents to please ensure that their child is in possession of a phone card. These are available at the cost of R20 from the secretary’s office or from the Bursar, Mrs Caldis. From this week onwards we will only be allowing children to call home should an extra-mural be cancelled. We will not be allowing children to call home if they have forgotten P.E. togs or projects, etc. Should your child fall ill during school hours the secretary will contact you.

TWO FUNCTIONS ON ONE DAY

The Grade R concert at the Prep school is due to be over by 18:00. The Annual Music Recital, taking place at our school is due to start at 19:00. Hopefully any families that may have children participating in both functions will be able to attend both of them. It is always difficult trying to find days and times that will suit all parties and in this instance the 17th suited everyone best. We trust it will not cause anyone any measure of difficulty.
