Caring Week

Dear Parent(s) / Guardian(s)

We had the most wonderful launch of Character Counts and particularly ‘Caring Week’ in our assembly last week. Chaeli, a grade 9 learner in mainstream education, who suffers from severe cerebral palsy was at our assembly accompanied by her mother, Zelda. A video, shown on Carte Blanche, highlighting the work of Chaeli and her friends in raising funds for an automated wheelchair was shown. Chaeli is confined to a wheelchair and is unable to dress herself or feed herself. In the assembly Kelsey Mayhew and her team, Carmen and Meghan Howell, Katya Allan and Julia Landstedt handed over the cheque of R2 363-00, from their initiative of selling cupcakes, to Chaeli. It was a touching and heart-wrenching story – you could hear a pin drop in the assembly but what was so amazing and a lesson for all of us was not only to appreciate what we have and how fortunate we are but also to learn from Chaeli’s outlook on life which is not to focus on what we can’t do but what we can do! Chaeli’s mom also showed us a short video snippet of Chaeli ballroom dancing in her wheelchair with a partner!

Equally as special was an impressive presentation by Joshua Guenther, a grade 6 learner, who informed us of his family’s visit to Nicaragua during the holidays to support an organisation called ‘Compassion’. Joshua informed us of what you can do with R250 a month – Joshua and his family are sponsoring two disadvantaged children in Nicaragua and the Guenther family went to meet the children who are now in regular contact with Joshua and his brothers. Well done, Joshua on an outstanding speech to the school.

I did bring the concept of ‘caring’ closer to home and to within the school. We will continue with ‘Caring Week’ for another week and the children are encouraged to be caring. At the next assembly, once we have collected all the ‘caring’ reports, we will hand out medals to those pupils who have been caring to others. The following week we will move on to ‘Respect Week’.

This week in the assembly the P.T.A. Moms will be launching their first main fundraiser of the year: Senor Chef and the sale of spices and Ina Paarman products. Please support this two week fundraiser (15 May to the end of May 2009). The prices are market related prices and the school receives 25% of all sales! Be prepared for the sales forms etc to be brought home on Friday.

Please make an effort to attend next week’s Founders’ Day Assembly on Friday 22 May at 09h00 as well as the Camps Bay Schools’ Soiree (Variety Show) next week Friday 22 May and Saturday 23 May 2009 which includes staff participation, including the Principals! Please see details below but tickets are open to the preparatory, primary and high schools and tickets are been sold fast – don’t be disappointed. Along with this week’s newsletter each child has received a flyer / booking form for the Camps Bay Schools’ Soiree. Please return this to your child’s class teacher as soon as possible.
HAIR AND UNIFORM INSPECTION: Please take note that we will be having a hair and uniform inspection on Monday, 18 May 2009. Please ensure that your child(ren) are properly attired in the correct school uniform and that their hair is appropriately styled according to school guidelines.

SPORT CALENDAR: Each child received along with today’s newsletter a Sporting Calendar detailing all the sport fixtures for the remainder of the second term.

SCHOOL GOVERNING BODY ELECTION: You should have received a notification letter last week. Nomination forms can be collected from Pat Readman. Camps Bay Primary’s SGB election will take place on Wednesday 27 May 2009 at 17h30 in the Bernie Segal Memorial Hall. Please diarise this date and make an effort to attend – it is an important election for the future of our school and we have to have a quorum of 15% of the parent body present for the election to take place.

ASCENSION DAY: Please take note that the Camps Bay Schools will be closed on Ascension Day 21 May 2009 this year. (Consult previous newsletter for further information)

FOUNDERS’ DAY: Founders’ Day is taking place on Friday 22 May 2009. Each school will be hosting a special Founders’ Day assembly. We would like to extend an invitation to all parent(s) and guardian(s) to join us in celebrating this special day in the history of our school. The times for the assemblies at each of the schools are indicated below.

SCHOOL GOVERNING BODY PLANNING COMMITTEE
The School Governing Body have formed a Planning Committee to co-ordinate and prioritise projects for the school. The committee consists of Charles Thesen, Alten Hulme, Liesel Visagie and myself. There are a lot of projects that we would all like to do around the school but we need to look at the ‘bigger picture’ and prioritise. If you have any suggestions, please email a detailed proposal to Pat Readman who will then forward your suggestions to the Planning Committee for consideration. However, for 2009 the following projects have been identified:
Smartboards
Playground upgrade (benches, jungle gym, resurfacing)
Upgrade of bathroom and toilets
Furniture (desks)
Science Lab – has been completed with minimal costs
Grade 2 classroom for 2010

Please contact the office should this not be the case with your child. Thank you.

SPORT: WELL DONE
Satya Jones (Grade 5D) played in an informal tennis tournament at the Strand Tennis Club, organised by Pierre and Lienkie Montgomery (tennis coaches in the area). This is unfortunately not one of the Boland tennis series. He played Intermediate, against various age groups. However, he must be complemented for his tenacity and fighting spirit as he managed to come out tops of the 42 players that were in his group. Well done Satya we are proud of you.
On Saturday, 9 May, Marc van der Meer represented Western Province at the World Shotokan Karate (WSKF) Nationals, held in Somerset West, and won the Gold Medal for his green belt in Kata.
