International Educators Day

Dear Parent(s) / Guardian(s)

Welcome back to term 4. It is difficult to believe that we are already on the home straight to the end of the year!

INTERNATIONAL EDUCATORS’ DAY: We started the term off with World Teachers’ Day. What a wonderful day to start off the term! The ‘surprise secret’ with the pupils worked well with the teachers and staff been appreciated with beautiful notes and thoroughly spoilt with treats. The PTA Moms provided the most stunning lunch or should I say feast! The lunch all beautifully set out in the staffroom consisted of an array of delicious mezzes followed by a delectable dessert of meringues with strawberries and cream. The staff are most appreciative of your kindness and on behalf of the staff I would like to express a sincere thanks to all who contributed to make the day so special for our teachers and staff. A special thanks to the following Moms who contributed to the stunning lunch:
Carolyn Duangprom, Berna Howell, Louise Robinson, Marianthi Dickie, Nike Romano,
Ingrid Beimel, Trudi Hartzenberg, Helen Phillips, Kenau Allan, Monet Tambusso,
Suzie Joubert, Mariella Brochetto, Avril Thomson, Bridget Heather-Clarke, Colleen Wright,
Sophia Mortakis

DUCK-A-THON: The big moment has arrived!
On Friday 9 October we will be having a casual (civvies) day – the theme ‘anything yellow’! Each child needs to pay R5 to wear casual clothes to school on Friday. Duck-a-thon Carnival Day is this Saturday from 8am to 4pm. The day promises to be an exciting and fun-filled day of games and activities.
There are a number of games which include:
Laser Quest
Nintendo Wii on the big screen in the hall
Fun games on the 5-a-side soccer field
Swimming games in the pool
(Children MUST BRING SWIMWEAR)

Each grade will also be running food stalls on the Netball court.
At 12h00 will be the judging of the ‘Decorating Duck’ competitions by a group of prestigious ‘outside’ judges! At 12h00 the Beer Garden and Wines of the Cape will open for adults to accompany your lunch!
At 15h00 all the little yellow ducks will be thrown into the pool for the ‘Lucky Duck’ draw and a certain principal will dive in to draw out the lucky ducks! There are loads of prizes and there will be many winners but the BIG lucky duck prize is a Nintendo Wii console.

I would like to take this opportunity to wish Carol Bysshe and Julie Friedman who have worked incredibly hard all the best for the day. It is the first time we are organising a Carnival Day and we would like to build and grow this event to make it our annual fundraising event.
Enclosed please find a programme of the events and activities on the day.

PLEASE SUPPORT AS THIS IS FOR THE BENEFIT OF OUR SCHOOL.

Have fun and enjoy the day.
Weather forecast: warm and sunny, windy south-easter but no rain!

PARKING: We do anticipate traffic congestion but this is beyond our control. Unfortunately we cannot open the Symmonds field to parking as we are presently upgrading the condition of the field with fertiliser and grass. There is, however, limited parking in the parking lot at the Symmonds field.

EXTRA-MURAL PROGRAMME: TERM 4: Enclosed please find the extra-mural timetable that includes the Summer Sports programme. A reminder of the school sports policy: every child in the school is compelled to participate in ONE summer sport and ONE winter sport. Please discuss the choice of a sport with your child very carefully before completing the sports registration form. A reminder, parents need to please ensure that your child attends all practices and matches. Teachers and coaches have been instructed to take a register at all practices and there will be repercussions (demerits) for children who do not attend practices without a valid reason. Please could you provide a letter to the teacher prior to the absence. Repeated absence from practices, without reason, will result in detention. As you are aware, we are a small staff and at present we run a very full extra-mural programme. There is a need to employ outside coaches, who are difficult to source to assist, but this is costly. We have formed a sports committee, headed by Mrs Hamber, comprising parents to assist with the management of the sports programme at the school. The following parents have indicated their involvement on this committee: Mrs Sandy Hareb, Mr Luke Dollimore, Mrs Sandy Burman. If any other parents are willing to assist on the sports front, please contact Mrs Hamber (Head of Sport).
Athletics: We urgently need parents to assist with the coaching of the following disciplines: high jump, long jump, sprints (and relays) and long distance. This would mean one afternoon per week of coaching. If you are able to assist, please contact Beth Hamber or Sandy Hareb.

SUMMER SPORTS PROGRAMME STARTS ON MONDAY 12 OCTOBER 2009.

Senior Grade Plays

Dear Parent(s) / Guardian(s)

GRADE 6 & 7 PLAYS: The grade 6 and 7 plays on Tuesday and Wednesday night were absolutely amazing! We had a bit of Bollywood, ‘Saturday Night Live’ reality TV show as well as 1920s gangsterism led by ‘Fat Sam’ (Ethan Philander) and ‘Dandy Dan’ (Alexander Dickie) from Bugsy Malone. The grade 7 girls, in beautiful twenties dresses, entertained us as ‘flappers’ with some wonderful dance routines. The grade 6 and 7 pupils are to be commended on a superb evening of entertainment. Both nights played out to full houses. Congratulations and thank you to the grade 6 and 7 class-teachers as well as to Ms Gibbs, Mr Rycroft and particularly Ms Attwell who was responsible for directing and staging the plays. You are all stars!

If you are unable to collect the reports at this time, the reports will be available for collection from reception on Wednesday morning from 08h00 until 11h00.

I received a wonderful thank you letter from Elle Joannides and Sandra Jackson on soccer (under-11A) and rugby this week. Here follows an extract on the first rugby match played by our team. On Monday 14 September the grade 6s played their first match of the season against Kronendal. We were there, in undisguised support of Camps Bay Primary. We watched as the coach prepped the boys before the game. The whistle blew, and the players ran onto the field, each one taking his place. The initial silence was broken by a superb pass made to Tommy, who blasted his way to the try-line and dived across ‘Bryan Habana-style’. Go Tommy!
Well done to every member of the team. We did lose the match 25 points to 5 but who said ‘winning is everything’!

Duck-a-thon

DUCK-A-THON
We launched the Duck-a-thon in the assembly last week Friday with ‘yours truly’ attired in ‘duck outfit’ (wetsuit, flippers, goggles and snorkel) which caused great excitement for the pupils and contributed to stirring up duck-a-mania in the school, however, some more important information for you as parents, which was explained to the children in the assembly. Firstly, the actual Duck-a-thon Carnival event is on Saturday 10 October 2009. The Duck-a-thon carnival day will involve games organised by each grade on the Netball court, a food-stall with a theme organised by each grade as well as the ‘lucky duck’ draw in the swimming pool. Nintendo Wii will be setting up a large plasma screen in the hall for the children to play games on for a fee of R5. It promises to be a fun day. Apropos the purchasing of ducks:small yellow ducks at R25 each that will be numbered and placed in the pool for a ‘lucky duck’ draw and there are loads of prizes that includes the first prize of a Wii console with a sports package worth R4000. corporate or family duck (large pink duck) at R250 each which have to be entered into ‘decorated duck’ competition. A number of these decorated ducks are on display in the trophy cabinet outside reception – please pop in and have a look at the decorated ducks on display as they are amazing! Special family of ducks: one large pink duck and four yellow ducks plus one free yellow duck for R350. The winning class which raises the most money will be taken in a bus, driven by Mr Collier, to ‘MacDonalds’ for lunch! Carol Bysshe and Julie Friedman have done an amazing job at launching and organising this fundraiser but as stated before it does need to be a team effort of ALL parents involved to make it a success.

SCHOOL SURVEYS
All schools have been instructed to conduct a Whole School Evaluation for 2009. This has come at a convenient time for the school as, from the point of view of been a newly appointed Principal and a new School Governing Body, it will give insight into the strengths of the school but also provide insight into areas that need improvement. The survey includes all role-players, including educators, parents and learners. This is an opportunity for us to hear what you would like to tell us, be it positive, negative, critical or complimentary – we will take note of your comments. Enclosed with the newsletter is the WCED ‘Parent Survey’, please complete the survey and return it to the school before next Friday 18 September 2009.

NO ASSEMBLY ON FRIDAY 11 SEPTEMBER: Due to the Royal Academy of Dance Ballet exams that will be taking place in our hall this Friday, 11 September, there will not be an assembly this week. We would like to take this opportunity to wish all our learners that are taking part in the ballet exam all the best to dance well. IMPORTANT SPORT NOTICE: Apart from Boys’ Soccer all other winter sports programmes finish this week Friday, 11 September 2009. This is to accommodate the grade 6 and 7 plays that are been staged next week. Boys’ Soccer finishes next week on Friday, 18 September 2009 due to the fact that matches have already been scheduled for next week, however, there will be no further practices held for Boys Soccer after the 11 September 2009.

GENERAL:
NITS & LICE
There have again been a number of incidents of nits and lice. The problem of nits and lice is not unique to our school – it is a common problem, particularly in primary schools. The Departmental and School policy is that children who are found to have hair lice and/or nits are required to be sent home and must stay at home for 3 days from commencement of treatment – this is in an effort to prevent the further spread of lice to other learners. Teachers are vigilant to detect if children have lice but it is not the teacher’s responsibility to check all children. Please check your child’s head and hair and should your child have lice, please consult your local pharmacist for further information on the correct treatment procedure.

Spring Civvies Day

Dear Parent(s) / Guardian(s)

The mornings are still rather chilly but it is certainly getting lighter and pupils and teachers are not arriving at school in the dark! Am I imagining it or is spring in the air? On Tuesday 1 September we will be having a Civvies Day to celebrate the arrival of spring. The cost of wearing civvies is R5 and the money will be sent to the Chaeli Campaign for disabled children. There is a national civvies day on the 4 September in aid of children with disabilities but Camps Bay Primary have decided to go ahead with the 1 September as our civvies day, as planned at the beginning of the term. The theme is ‘flower-power’ or bright colours. The grade 3’s will be planting a tree that will be their tree and they will be able to watch their tree grow until they leave in grade 7 to see how much it has grown in the years while they are at the primary school!

Apart from the Civvies Day, there are number of exciting events coming up in the next few weeks. Firstly, this Friday will be an assembly led by the grade 7’s and in next week Friday’s assembly wii (sic) have the exciting launch of the Duck-a-thon! WATCH THIS SPACE for more information! Carol Bysshe and Julie Friedman are going BIG!! This is our main fundraiser for the year – wii are behind in our fundraising this year and wii need ALL parents and families to be involved not just the core group of families that are always involved and supportive. This needs to be a TEAM effort if wii want to make Camps Bay Primary the best! The actual Duck-a-thon event is next term on Friday 9th and Saturday 10th October 2009.

INVITATION TO EXCITING ASSEMBLY:
An invitation to an exciting assembly on 4 September with a difference, Wii would like you to come and see what the duck in the newsletter is all about.

GRADES 6 & 7 PLAYS:
Also lined up is the Grade 6 and 7 Plays on Tuesday 15th and Wednesday 16th September at 19h00 in the Bernie Segal Memorial Hall. The grade 6s and 7s are frantically rehearsing their plays and they are always a highlight on the school calendar. Make sure you diarise and attend the Camps Bay Primary Play on one of the nights. Tickets are R20 for children and R30 for adults.

SAFETY OF OUR CHILDREN
There have been a number of crime-related incidents in Camps Bay and in the ‘Little Glen’. You will have noticed that we now have an ADT Guard on duty from 6am to 6pm stationed mainly at the front entrance. The gentleman’s name is Hans and he has been screened by ADT. He is here at the school for a trial period until the end of the year. ADT have trained guards at a number of schools around the Peninsula. Although it is not the school’s responsibility to take care of children after they leave school in the afternoons, we are concerned for their safety. Please we strongly urge you as parents to not allow your child(ren) to walk in greenbelts after school and to be aware of their whereabouts once they leave school in the afternoons.

LATECOMING IN THE MORNING:
There is a steady stream of pupils arriving late every morning. Often it is the same pupils continuously arriving late. Please can you make an effort to get your child(ren) to school on time – we try and encourage pupils to be punctual as a life-skill. It is also disruptive to the class if pupils arrive late for class once lessons have started. We do need your assistance in this regard, however, the procedure for latecoming is as follows:
if late, pupil reports to Reception – pupil is issued with a late slip
2 late-slips = a demerit
3 demerits = a detention
If there is a valid reason for arriving late, please provide a note or a letter on the day and the child will not be issued with a demerit. Thank you for your support.

MERIT AWARDS: Congratulations to the following pupils, each of whom was presented with a merit award at our assembly. We are proud of each one of you and would like to encourage you all to continue doing your best at all times.

Garner Brown
Jared Lombard
Jonathan Scott
Brandon Filmer

WELL DONE:
To Nicol Black who competed in the Western Province Rhythmic Gymnastics competition Level 2 Under 9 on Saturday, 22 August 2009 and came third in her age category.

To Mikaela Füscher who came third in the Western Province Rhythmic Gymnastics Championships (Level 4) this past weekend and will be representing South Africa in the National Championships in October. She will also be representing Western Province in the South African Figure Skating Championships.

SPORT:
It has been brought to my attention that a number of very good soccer players are not playing school soccer but are playing for the club. This is most disappointing as it is not supporting the school in our efforts to promote and build sport at the school. The sports policy at the school is that pupils are compelled to play ONE summer sport and ONE winter sport at the school. If pupils do not attend practices they are issued with a demerit and if they do attend a match they are placed in detention. Please ensure that your child attends all practices and matches.

SPORT RESULTS:
20 August the U9A soccer boys played a match against Herzlia Highlands and drew 0-0. Matthew Berman was “Man of the Match”. Thank you to the parents and Mr Collier for coming to support us.

20 August the U9B soccer boys played a match against Weizmann. Unfortunately we lost 2-0.
“Man of the Match” was Jonathan Scott.

Squash results: Camps Bay Primary won their match against SACS ‘B’ team by 3 matches to 1.
Dillon Pead won 3-0, Mujahid Londt won 3-0, Daniel Pelman lost 3-1 and Ryan Kearney won 3-0.

MAGAZINE SPONSORSHIP: A reminder to please return the forms that were handed out with last week’s newsletter as soon as possible.

Social Networking: Parents Informative Evening

Dear Parent(s) / Guardian(s)

A number of the educators have been away ill this week but we have managed to use the services of Mrs Karakondis, Mrs Howell as well as teachers during their admin time to substitute teach in classes to ensure that effective teaching takes place. I am pleased to inform you that the pupil attendance at school has improved considerably and the absentee record is as per normal for this time of the year. However, the school is receiving a number of telephone calls from parents inquiring about measures taken by the school to combat the outbreak of the flu – this information did appear in the Newsletter 23/09 dated 6 August but for your further information: the governors and school management team enacted the following precautionary measures which have been in place since early August:
Pupils who show flu-like symptoms will be sent home and are not to return to school until they are fully recovered.
Anti-bacterial dry hand-wash (used in hospitals) in each classroom – teachers will ensure that this is used by all children at the start of the day and at the end of breaks.
Teachers will accompany classes to the bathroom for regular washing of hands during the course of the day. Soap has been placed in the bathrooms
A box of tissues in classrooms
Desk tops in the classrooms will be cleaned daily
Keyboards in the Computer Lab will also be cleaned regularly
Children are encouraged to cough / sneeze into a hand, sleeve or crook of the elbow.

Cross-Country

Dear Parent(s) / Guardian(s)

I thought it would be an interesting exercise to benchmark the standard of Maths and Languages at Camps Bay Primary by analysing the grade 8 midyear exam results at the high school. The reason for this exercise is to assess our preparation of pupils for high school and also because I receive a number of queries from parents on the standard of Numeracy and Literacy at the school. I analysed the results of the Camps Bay Primary pupils from the grade 7 class of last year, presently in grade 8 at the high school, relative to the rest of the grade. I am pleased to inform you that the results of our pupils in grade 8 for Numeracy and Literacy are highly commendable.

Last year’s grade 7 class was quite a small class and only 31 pupils from the primary school went to the high school. There are at present 128 grade 8 pupils at the high school. Herewith follows the results:
MATHS (Numeracy)
Grade 8 average = 54,52%
CBPS pupils’ average = 62,1%
1 CBPS child achieved 90% +
5 CBPS children achieved 80% +
7 CBPS children achieved 70% +
4 CBPS children achieved 60% +
In effect 17 of the 31 children who attended CBPS last year achieved over 60% for Mathematics in the grade 8 high school midyear exam.
ENGLISH (Literacy)
Grade 8 average = 54,01%
CBPS pupils’ average = 61%
2 CBPS children achieved 80%+
8 CBPS children achieved 70%+
9 CBPS children achieved 60%+
In effect 19 children of the 31 who attended CBPS last year achieved over 60% for English in the grade 8 high school midyear exam
AFRIKAANS
Grade 8 average = 54,05%
CBPS pupils’ average = 53,7%
1 CBPS child achieved 80%+
3 CBPS children achieved 70%+
4 CBPS children achieved 60% +
7 CBPS children achieved 50%+
In effect 15 children of the 30 (one exempt) who attended CBPS last year achieved over 50% for Afrikaans in the grade 8 high school exam. There is room for improvement in this area but with Mrs Visagie (grade 7), Mr Ryklieff (grade 6) and Mrs Weldon (grade 5) who are all fluent in Afrikaans I anticipate an improvement in the level of Afrikaans teaching and preparation of CBPS pupils for high school in this subject. I must add that one cannot only rely on Afrikaans teaching in the classroom. As a language, Afrikaans needs to be spoken in your home for one hour per day or on one day per week to facilitate any significant improvement. Children also need to be encouraged to read Afrikaans books or magazines. It needs to be a team effort!

STAR MATHS OLYMPIAD
12 300 pupils from the Western Cape entered the Star Maths Olympiad.
I would again like to take this opportunity to commend the 12 learners who succeeded in attaining a position in the Top-200 in the Western Cape in the Olympiad. The medals and certificates were handed out at a prestigious prize-giving at the Baxter Theatre and the former Minister of Education, now Minister of Science and Technology, Ms Naledi Pandor was the guest-speaker.

Six of our pupils were placed in the Top-60 in the Western Cape:
57th – Maxine Beimel
47th – Joshua Guenther
46th – Tommy Posen
35th – Maya Greyling
21st – Cassidy Nicholson
17th out of 12 300 pupils in the Western Cape – Cullam Geyser.
Congratulations! This is an outstanding achievement and we are very proud of all of you!

INFLUENZA:
I would like to inform you that Camps Bay Primary does have one confirmed case of the H1N1 virus, however, there is no cause for alarm, as the child has been away from school as of Monday 3 August 2009. You should have received notification of this on our sms service on Tuesday. Please consult the previous newsletter for all the precautionary measures that we have taken to combat the flu at school. Please a further notification that if a child is suffering from an illness it is advisable for him or her to stay at home for 7 days after the start of the illness and only to return to school once he/she is fully recovered. Please adhere to this request, as we have had to send a number of children home who were showing flu-like symptoms. Children that are not ill MUST please attend school, as the teachers need to continue with teaching to complete the curriculum.
RAK (Random Acts of Kindness) WEEK:
Thank you for your generosity and ‘acts of kindness’. The boxes at Reception are full of items for the Christine Revell Home for children. The response has been amazing and Camps Bay Primary has definitely shown that it is ‘a school that cares’. Influenza Procedures

Dear Parent(s) / Guardian(s)

Enclosed with the newsletter please find the following documents for your use and convenience:
Term 3 Calendar of Events (parents of grades 4 and 7 received this at the respective grade meetings).

Term 3 Winter Sports Fixture List. You should have received a letter, sent home yesterday, explaining the arrangements for the Cross-Country event taking place on Friday 7 August 2009. You should have also received an Assessment Timetable of tests, projects and assignments for term 3, which was issued to your child by their respective class teachers. Please ask for this Assessment Timetable from your child and if one is not forthcoming, please contact the respective class teacher to obtain a copy. You are encouraged to closely monitor this assessment timetable to ensure that your child completes all the tasks required timeously as well as prepares thoroughly for tests this term. In assembly on Friday I will be addressing the significance of National Women’s Day which is the public holiday on Monday 10 August 2009. We will also be entertained by the Camps Bay High School Music Department in the assembly.

INFLUENZA: A further precautionary notification: As I am sure you are aware there has been an outbreak of influenza in the country and there have also now been confirmed cases of H1N1 ‘swine’ flu at a number of schools in the Peninsula. At present we have had no confirmed cases of swine flu at Camps Bay Primary. Symptoms of H1N1 flu include a very high fever, vomiting, muscle pain amongst other symptoms. We would like to advise you that if your child is experiencing illness or flu-like symptoms to consult your doctor or visit your local health practitioner provider to have a check-up. If a child is suffering from an illness it is advisable for him or her to stay at home for 7 days after the start of the illness and only to return to school once he/she is fully recovered. I have asked the teachers to encourage pupils to practise respiratory hygiene by encouraging pupils to cough or sneeze into a tissue, hand or into the crook of the elbow as well as regular washing of hands. There is NO NEED FOR ALARM OR PANIC, however, the governors and school management team have decided on the following precautionary measures:
Pupils who show flu-like symptoms will be sent home and are not to return to school until they are fully recovered. Teachers will accompany classes to the bathroom for regular washing of hands during the course of the day. Soap has been placed in the bathrooms
Anti-bacterial dry hand-wash will be placed in each classroom. Teachers will ensure that this is used by ALL the children at the start of the day and at the end of breaks
A box of tissues in classrooms
Desk tops in the classrooms will be cleaned daily
Keyboards in the Computer Lab will also be cleaned regularly
Teachers have been requested to show leniency to pupils who are absent w.r.t. the missing of a test due dates for projects and assignments.
The Department of Education has sent a directive for procedures to follow in the event of a confirmed case of H1N1 swine flu but they have given the instruction that Principals may not close schools. One of the set procedures in the directive is to provide parent(s) / guardian(s) with information if there are any reported and confirmed cases, which I will do on our sms service.

RAK (Random Acts of Kindness) WEEK: The three schools are all this week running RAK Week at their respective schools. Camps Bay Primary has selected to ‘show kindness’ to the Christine Revel Children’s Home which is a home for 50 children abandoned, abused, orphaned and neglected children. The response has been a little slow and therefore I have decided to extend RAK Week to the end of next week, Friday 14 August 2009. Please donate generously and show that ‘we are the school that cares’! The following products are on the list of requirements: towels, nappies, bath soap, brooms, mops, baby lotion and baby oil, hair brushes, washing powder, toilet paper, bleach and Handy-Andy. We are running an Inter-house competition to see which house is the MOST CARING! Points will be allocated to the House that is the most caring. Pupils are requested to bring products to school and place them in their respective HOUSE BOXES at Reception.

Thank you to Carol Bysshe and Moms for organising cakes and refreshments for the local Camps Bay police station on Wednesday morning. A group of grade 4 and 7 pupils, on behalf of Camps Bay Primary, delivered the cakes to the police station to show our appreciation as a school for the thankless task which the police do, providing safety and security for the community. I believe a number of our pupils were locked up in the cells and were transported back to school in the back of the police van with lights flashing!!

CROSS-COUNTRY: FRIDAY 7 AUGUST 2009: Please consult the letter handed out on Wednesday for full details. Camps Bay Primary will be holding the annual Inter-house Cross-Country event on Friday 7 August 2009. The entire school, pupils accompanied by class teachers, will be WALKING from Camps Bay Primary, departing at 10h00, to the high school. (Lifts are no longer required) The Cross-Country event is a fun event in which all pupils are expected to participate, either to run or walk the 2km course, and it will take place from 11h30 to 13h00. Please collect your child from the high school at 13h00 on Friday afternoon. The After-care children will be transported back to the primary school after the event.

SWIMMING: Please note there will be no swimming this Friday due to the cross-country.

STEELBAND: There will be no Steelband on Friday after school due to the cross-country but a practice will take place at 08:50 during the school day.
READ-A-THON: As reported in the previous newsletter, a phenomenal R30 000 was raised from the Read-a-thon fundraiser. Thank you again to all those wonderful readers and parents, grandparents and friends who sponsored our children in their reading over the holiday period. The winners of the prizes for the Read-a-thon were as follows:

SPORT:
POLICY FOR SELECTION OF TEAMS:
A decision was taken by the governors and the school management team on the selection of teams to play matches as follows:
If Camps Bay Primary is able to field two teams for a sport in a particular age-group, the A-team will be selected ON MERIT and for the B-team all players will be given an opportunity to play on a rotational basis. If Camps Bay Primary can only field one team for a sport in a particular age-group, the team which is automatically then the A-team, will also be selected ON MERIT. Players that are not selected are encouraged to practise and strive to improve to gain selection for the team. This is standard practice in sport and at most schools. Players who do not attend practices, irrespective of their abilities, will not be selected for matches. While our approach is to encourage participation, we need to select a team of players that can be competitive when playing against other teams from other schools.

SWIMMING: Please note that Wendy Way will be away for SA champs from Thursday 6 August until Tuesday 11 August. Early morning swimming will still be taking place with Wendy Hartog.

GENERAL:

Derby Day Results and More!

Dear Parent(s) / Guardian(s)

I will be away on Thursday and Friday this week as I am attending a Principal’s Conference organised by SAPA (South African Principal’s Association). The conference is being held in Caledon and the theme of the seminar is ‘10 Traits of Highly Effective Principals’. Mrs Visagie will be Acting Principal in my absence.

The Derby Day turned out to be wonderful day in glorious sunshine. I have only had positive feedback and we will be definitely adding the Derby Day with Llandudno Primary as an annual event on our school calendar. The sport results are listed below but the fine spirit and camaraderie in which the Derby Day was conducted was the main aim of the event. Thank you to all who contributed to making the day a success. Special thanks to the PTA led by Sophia Mortakis, as well as to Carol Bysshe and Julie Friedman, assisted by the team of Dads who did the braaing, for organising the boerewors rolls. We are planning to have more of these events on the Symmonds field.

DUNKELD ROAD: As you are aware there is a lot of construction in Dunkeld Road at present, from road-works and pipes been laid to houses been renovated and rebuilt. Please I would like to make an appeal to all parents to please be careful and PATIENT when ‘dropping off’ or collecting your child/ children in the mornings and afternoons, but particularly in the mornings, as we have had a number of unpleasant incidents that have been a danger to the safety of our pupils. I have instructed the pupils that once they have been ‘dropped off’ at school they may not leave the premises of the school unless they have received permission from Mrs Visagie or me.

READ-A-THON: Congratulations, readers! We have raised a massive amount of R30 000 from the Read-a-thon fundraiser, breaking last year’s record of R20 000. This is an amazing amount! Well done to all the children as well as to the parents, grandparents and friends who sponsored our children in their reading over the holiday period. This money raised will be used to purchase more books for our library as well as will make a worthy contribution towards our Smart boards. A special thanks to Ms Susie Joubert for organising and co-ordinating the Read-a-thon. The names of the prize-winners will be printed in next week’s newsletter as the prize-winners are being announced in the assembly on Friday morning.

RANDOM ACTS OF KINDNESS WEEK: 3 – 7 AUGUST 2009: The three-schools will all be running RAK Week next week but each school has selected a specific institution to show kindness. Camps Bay Primary has selected the Christine Revel Children’s Home. It is a home for 50 children: abandoned, abused, orphaned and neglected children. Mrs Visagie will be launching RAK Week in the assembly on Friday. Please donate generously and show that ‘we are the school that cares’!
The following products are on the list of requirements:
Towels
Nappies and nappy pins
Bath soap
Brooms and mops
Baby lotion and baby oil
Hair brushes
Washing powder
Toilet paper
Bleach and Handy Andy
We will be running an Inter-house competition to see which house is the MOST CARING! Points will be allocated to the House that is the most caring! Pupils are requested to bring products to school and place them in their respective HOUSE BOXES that will be placed outside Reception.

As part of RAK Week the three-schools have also decided that we would like to show our appreciation to the local SAPS at the Camps Bay police-station. Camps Bay Prep will be donating plants to the police-station on Monday, Camps Bay Primary will be providing cake and tea/refreshments to the police on Wednesday and Camps Bay High will be providing cooldrinks on Friday! A number of our pupils will be delivering the cake and refreshments to the Camps Bay police-station on Wednesday. If you able to assist with this gesture of appreciation to the SAPS, please contact Carol Bysshe on 072 200 2691.

CROSS-COUNTRY: FRIDAY 7 AUGUST 2009: We will be holding our annual Combined Cross Country event on Friday 7 August 2009 from 11h30 to 13h00 at the high school. Mrs Weldon and Mrs Hamber are the co-ordinators of this event and you will be receiving a letter informing you of all the details and requesting assistance with transport. We still require a number of volunteer marshalls to ensure the safety of our runners in this event. Should you be able to assist please contact the office as soon as possible. Thank you.

MERIT AWARDS: Congratulations to the following pupils, each of whom was presented with a merit award at our assembly. We are proud of each one of you and would like to encourage you all to continue doing your best at all times.
