Dear Parent(s) / Guardian(s)
This week is another ‘big’ week for Camps Bay Primary with two exciting events on the programme. Firstly, you are invited to attend our Founder’s Day assembly on Friday 22 May at 09h00. All guests, past pupils and parents are also invited for tea and refreshments which will be served after the high school assembly in the seminar room at the high school at 11h00. Secondly, you and your children are invited to attend the Camps Bay Schools’ Soiree (Variety Show) on Friday 22 May or Saturday 23 May which includes pupil performances and staff participation, including the three principals! The Camps Bay Primary staff item is a well-polished item and is a ‘hit’ on the programme – please come and see the teachers ‘voulez-vous-ing! It promises to be a lot of fun but tickets are being sold fast – don’t be disappointed! Tickets can be purchased from Mrs Belinda Caldis or Mrs Vivienne Ashcroft. Please see full details on the above-mentioned events below.
ASCENSION DAY: THURSDAY 21 MAY 2009: As stated in previous newsletters, the principals of the three schools took a joint decision to close on this day as in the past it has been difficult to manage the academic programme as teachers and pupils stay away for religious reasons. It was decided that all three schools should make a collective decision to prevent further absenteeism and confusion, however, I would like pupils to utilise this day to complete assignments and do some revision and studying for the Assessment Week which takes place from 1 June to 12 June 2009.
Ms Bührmann and I attended a conference organised by the South African Principal’s Association (SAPA) held at the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC) last week Friday afternoon and Saturday. There were a number of international speakers and presenters. Ms Bührmann thoroughly enjoyed the presentation by a lady from the USA who uses song and CDs to story-tell in foundation phase. I personally was quite fascinated with the presentation by Dr Amaya, an educational professor from Mexico, whose focus was on ‘brain gender differences’ and the differences required in one’s approach to educating boys as opposed to girls. Another interesting point gleaned from the conference was from a DVD presentation on Creativity in Schools by Sir Ken Robinson, an internationally recognised leader in the development of innovation and human resources. He claims creativity in schools is as important as literacy! He encouraged educators to be like children: to be creative and be prepared to be wrong, making quite a profound point that as adults, educators and principals, if we are not prepared to experiment and be wrong by introducing new ideas – we can never be original!
STAFFING: Ms Adams (grade 4A) resigned with short notice but fortunately we were able to appoint Ms Hayley Afrika in her place until the end of the term. Ms Afrika is an experienced teacher with 14 years teaching experience and she has taught at Mandalay Primary, Pinelands North and Greenfields Primary. Ms Afrika has also been a substitute teacher at Camps Bay Primary this year and so she is familiar with the systems in operation at our school.
GRADE 5 SOS CAMP: The excited grade 5s left on their annual SOS Camp this morning and will return on Friday. For many of the grade 5s this is their first camp away from home! We wish them well and I am sure they will have a wonderful adventure camp. Hopefully they will have a rain free camp. Mrs De Wit, Mrs Weldon and Ms Ferreira will be accompanying the Grade 5s on this exciting adventure. Don’t get too home-sick, grade 5s and Moms don’t miss your son or daughter too much! We look forward to seeing you come back safe and sound on Friday. We will sms grade 5 parents on the arrival at the camp site as well as keep you informed by sms of the expected time of arrival of the bus back at school on Friday afternoon.
SENÕR CHEF FUNDRAISER: Please remember to send in your cash and order forms as soon as you have them. Additional order forms are available from the office. The last orders are due by next Thursday 28th May so do your best to sell as many products as you can for this final week. Keep in mind the great prizes to be won for the top 3 ‘sellers’ in the school as well as the class with the most orders. Happy selling.
SCHOOL GOVERNING BODY ELECTION: Nomination forms can be collected from Pat Readman. Camps Bay Primary’s SGB election will take place on Wednesday 27 May 2009 at 17h30 in the Bernie Segal Memorial Hall. Please diarise this date and make an effort to attend – it is an important election for the future of our school and we have to have a quorum of 15% of the parent body present for the election to take place.
FOUNDERS’ DAY: Founders’ Day is taking place on Friday 22 May 2009. Each school will be hosting a special Founders’ Day assembly. We would like to extend an invitation to all parent(s) and guardian(s) to join us in celebrating this special day in the history of our school. The times for the assemblies at each of the schools are indicated below.

Caring Week
Dear Parent(s) / Guardian(s)
We had the most wonderful launch of Character Counts and particularly ‘Caring Week’ in our assembly last week. Chaeli, a grade 9 learner in mainstream education, who suffers from severe cerebral palsy was at our assembly accompanied by her mother, Zelda. A video, shown on Carte Blanche, highlighting the work of Chaeli and her friends in raising funds for an automated wheelchair was shown. Chaeli is confined to a wheelchair and is unable to dress herself or feed herself. In the assembly Kelsey Mayhew and her team, Carmen and Meghan Howell, Katya Allan and Julia Landstedt handed over the cheque of R2 363-00, from their initiative of selling cupcakes, to Chaeli. It was a touching and heart-wrenching story – you could hear a pin drop in the assembly but what was so amazing and a lesson for all of us was not only to appreciate what we have and how fortunate we are but also to learn from Chaeli’s outlook on life which is not to focus on what we can’t do but what we can do! Chaeli’s mom also showed us a short video snippet of Chaeli ballroom dancing in her wheelchair with a partner!
Equally as special was an impressive presentation by Joshua Guenther, a grade 6 learner, who informed us of his family’s visit to Nicaragua during the holidays to support an organisation called ‘Compassion’. Joshua informed us of what you can do with R250 a month – Joshua and his family are sponsoring two disadvantaged children in Nicaragua and the Guenther family went to meet the children who are now in regular contact with Joshua and his brothers. Well done, Joshua on an outstanding speech to the school.
I did bring the concept of ‘caring’ closer to home and to within the school. We will continue with ‘Caring Week’ for another week and the children are encouraged to be caring. At the next assembly, once we have collected all the ‘caring’ reports, we will hand out medals to those pupils who have been caring to others. The following week we will move on to ‘Respect Week’.
This week in the assembly the P.T.A. Moms will be launching their first main fundraiser of the year: Senor Chef and the sale of spices and Ina Paarman products. Please support this two week fundraiser (15 May to the end of May 2009). The prices are market related prices and the school receives 25% of all sales! Be prepared for the sales forms etc to be brought home on Friday.
Please make an effort to attend next week’s Founders’ Day Assembly on Friday 22 May at 09h00 as well as the Camps Bay Schools’ Soiree (Variety Show) next week Friday 22 May and Saturday 23 May 2009 which includes staff participation, including the Principals! Please see details below but tickets are open to the preparatory, primary and high schools and tickets are been sold fast – don’t be disappointed. Along with this week’s newsletter each child has received a flyer / booking form for the Camps Bay Schools’ Soiree. Please return this to your child’s class teacher as soon as possible.
HAIR AND UNIFORM INSPECTION: Please take note that we will be having a hair and uniform inspection on Monday, 18 May 2009. Please ensure that your child(ren) are properly attired in the correct school uniform and that their hair is appropriately styled according to school guidelines.
SPORT CALENDAR: Each child received along with today’s newsletter a Sporting Calendar detailing all the sport fixtures for the remainder of the second term.
SCHOOL GOVERNING BODY ELECTION: You should have received a notification letter last week. Nomination forms can be collected from Pat Readman. SCHOOL GOVERNING BODY PLANNING COMMITTEE
The School Governing Body have formed a Planning Committee to co-ordinate and prioritise projects for the school. The committee consists of Charles Thesen, Alten Hulme, Liesel Visagie and myself. There are a lot of projects that we would all like to do around the school but we need to look at the ‘bigger picture’ and prioritise. If you have any suggestions, please email a detailed proposal to Pat Readman who will then forward your suggestions to the Planning Committee for consideration. However, for 2009 the following projects have been identified:
Smartboards

Satya Jones (Grade 5D) played in an informal tennis tournament at the Strand Tennis Club, organised by Pierre and Lienkie Montgomery (tennis coaches in the area). This is unfortunately not one of the Boland tennis series. He played Intermediate, against various age groups. However, he must be complemented for his tenacity and fighting spirit as he managed to come out tops of the 42 players that were in his group. Well done Satya we are proud of you.
On Saturday, 9 May, Marc van der Meer represented Western Province at the World Shotokan Karate (WSKF) Nationals, held in Somerset West, and won the Gold Medal for his green belt in Kata.

Character Counts Launch
Dear Parent(s) / Guardian(s)
In assembly this Friday, we will be launching ‘Character Counts’ for term 2 which is a programme for the term in which we focus on a character building trait in the assembly and this becomes the ‘focus of the week’. Character traits such as respect, caring for each other, honesty, good manners etc are important values and principles to develop and encourage among our pupils and in the school. This week’s focus will be ‘caring for others’ to coincide with caring for Moms on Mother’s Day. In the assembly Kelsey Mayhew, Megan and Carmen Howell, Katya Allen, and Amanda Bjorklund will be showing that they care for others by handing over the money raised by their initiative of selling cupcakes last term to the Chaeli Campaign for disadvantaged children – Chaeli will be attending the Assembly. Joshua Guenther will be showing that the Guenther family care by delivering a talk on their recent trip to assist an organisation called Compassion in Nicaragua. We will also then bring the idea of caring closer to home with Mother’s Day and caring within the school!
MOTHER’S DAY: To all the Mothers, we wish you a happy and special Mother’s Day on Sunday and hope your children spoil you with flowers and breakfast in bed!
Please take note of all the events and functions in this week’s newsletter – please diarise the dates. Some friendly reminders and repeat information from me:
SCHOOL GOVERNING BODY ELECTION: You should have received a notification letter last week. Nomination forms can be collected from Pat Readman.
ASCENSION DAY: Please take note that the Camps Bay Schools will be closed on Ascension Day 21 May 2009 this year. (Consult previous newsletter for further information)
WINTER SPORTS PROGRAMME: The winter sports programme should be fully operational and matches have already started. I attended under-11A and B Boys’ Soccer matches on the Camps Bay Club fields as well as the under-13A and B Boys’ Soccer matches on the Symmonds Field which all took place in the last week. We have received the match fixture lists for most of the sports offered and we will be compiling a comprehensive fixture list for all sports to be distributed to parents with next week’s newsletter for your planning and convenience. Please note that I have given the staff and coaches strict instructions that practices and matches may NOT to be cancelled. In the event of bad weather and rain Mrs Hamber (Head of Sport) and I will make a decision at second break whether or not to cancel practices, however, theory lessons until 15h00 will take place. Apart from theory lessons on rainy days, we would like to show sport videos and DVDs to pupils in place of theory lessons. If you have any sport videos and DVDs which you no longer use at home, please could you consider donating them to the school to show to the pupils. Matches are at times cancelled by the opposing teams but from our side Camps Bay Primary will NOT cancel matches. Please inform me if there are any irregularities to the above.

Smartboards
Playground upgrade (benches, jungle gym, resurfacing)
Upgrade of bathroom and toilets
Furniture (desks)
Science Lab – has been completed with minimal costs
Grade 2 classroom for 2010
DONATE-A-BENCH: The trees have been planted on either side of the Netball court and we are ready to proceed with the next step to organise FOUR benches. Any family who would like to donate a bench and a family plaque will be placed on the bench. The cost of a concrete and wooden bench (same as public benches) is R2500-00. We only need THREE benches as the Grobler-Muller family have kindly donated the money to purchase the first bench. Thank you very much to the Grobler-Muller family for their generosity in getting this project off the ground. If there are any other families who are willing to assist, please contact me personally. More than one family are also more than welcome to make a joint donation of a bench.
LOST PROPERTY
Keanu Allan has kindly made herself available to revamp and reorganise the ‘Lost Property’ system at the school. I am sure you will be informed of procedures shortly.
SMS SYSTEM: We recently sent out a letter to establish which parent’s / guardian’s cell phone number to use as the point of contact for our sms service. If we have not received the reply slip back from you please note that we will be placing the mother of the child as the point of contact. Please contact the office should this not be the case with your child. Thank you.

HABITAT FOR HUMANITY: Camps Bay High school is about to launch an exciting new venture this year. By the end of the year we aim to raise R80 000 that will fund a Habitat for Humanity project. Habitat for Humanity is an organisation that builds homes for families in need. Our students will not only be raising the R80 000, but they will be helping with the build! We are very excited about launching this project but we do need some help. We encourage you as parents to get your children involved as much as possible as this is a great opportunity for them to be involved with our community. If you as parents would like to get involved, are able to donate money, have ideas for fundraising, or would like to know more information, please get in touch with the school. One of our first initiatives in order to collect money is to sell beautiful silk roses for Mothers’ Day at the 3 schools. The roses will be yellow, red, white and pink and will sell at a cost of R3 each. You can place your orders with Bursar, Mrs Caldis. Please support this initiative. Thank you.
WATERCOLOUR COURSE: I will be starting an eight-week watercolour course on Tuesday evening, 12 May. This course will explore the use of watercolours to express oneself both realistically and in abstract symbols.
This course is ideal for anyone longing to learn or simply to explore their creative side.
