First newsletter of Term 2

Dear Parent(s) / Guardian(s)

Welcome back to the start of term 2 which has started in typical Camps Bay School style at a ‘cracking’ pace. As a Principal one is always concerned at a busy school to do one’s best to maintain and encourage academic focus at the school. I would like to make an appeal to you as parents that academics should always take priority in your child’s approach to school life, particularly this term, which includes an Assessment Week of tests and exams.

ACADEMIC FOCUS: The term started with the Parent-Teacher Meetings which took place last week Wednesday followed by the ‘Smartboard’ demonstration. Unfortunately the attendance of parents was most disappointing but thank you to those parents who did attend the demonstration – hopefully you were suitable impressed. More disappointing news is that the price of Smartboards has escalated considerably, however, the three-schools are still in the negotiation phase with the company to order and the primary school hopes to acquire our first Smartboard this term!

TERM 1 REPORTS: If you have not already done so please return your child’s report to his / her class teacher. Thank you.

TERM 2 ASSESSMENT CALENDAR: Teachers in each grade were instructed to draw-up an assessment calendar for the term. You and your child should have received the Term 2 Assessment Calendar of tests, assignments and projects which will take place this term. Please consult this calendar and monitor your child’s preparation for tests and assignments. Please be aware that there may be some changes depending on the progress of the class but teachers have been advised to restrict changes to a minimum.

STAFFING: Thank you to Mrs Judith Nott who substituted for Mrs Tina (van Hoof) Swart. Congratulations to Mrs Tina Swart on her marriage and we are very happy to have Tina back in the grade 3 class. Thank you to Mrs Hayley Afrika and Mrs Jenny Glover (both qualified teachers) who have kindly substituted for Ms Sobey while she has been away, also to get married. Mrs de Witt (Ms Sobey) will be returning on Wednesday 29 April 2009.

TERM 2 WINTER SPORTS PROGRAMME: We have launched the new expanded sports programme and you should have received an extra-mural timetable for term 2 at the end of last week. Hopefully you have, in discussion with your child, made a sports selection for your child for term 2. As explained in assembly, Mrs Hamber and I have drawn up an extra-mural timetable and with such a wide range of sports available we are aware that there will be clashes. Pupils are required to select one winter sport and if it is possible pupils may select a second sport but they need to be aware of the time involved and the impact this commitment may have on their academic progress.

Apart from all the other sports offered, the new expanded sports programme includes Rugby, Girls’ Hockey and Squash. The Rugby will be for grade 6 and 7 boys who will make use of the rugby field at the high school and coached by a past pupil and prefect at Camps Bay High, namely, Matthew Soekoe. Any ‘Dads’ who would like to act as a manager for the rugby boys are requested to please contact me personally. The Girls’ Hockey which is for under-13 & under-14 girls will be coached with the under-14 girls at the high school by Mrs Cronje who is a senior teacher at the school. The Squash is open to players who have played Squash before and will take place at the Camps Bay Club.

SYMMONDS FIELD: The Symmonds field has been prepared (mowed, fertilized and marked) for the Soccer season by Mr Vic van Heerden (Operations and Estate Manager for the high school) and his team who will now be taking care of our sporting facilities on the Symmonds field. I have no doubt there will be a progressive improvement in the state and condition of the Symmonds field.

BOOK WEEK: 20 – 24 APRIL 2009: This week is Book Week and Mr Gary Hirson, an author of children’s books was invited to the school to launch Book Week on Monday 20 April 2009. Today, Thursday 23 April 2009 is World Book Day and as stated in a previous newsletter, the culture of reading that Mrs Olivier (Librarian), parents and teachers have been able to inculcate at Camps Bay Primary is amazing and highly commendable. As a teacher in high school for more than twenty years, it was always so easy to identify pupils in the class who read – they are generally-speaking bright, have excellent literacy skills, are well informed and are invariably ‘top of the class’! To end off Book Week with a fun event, on Friday 24 April 2009, pupils are allowed to ‘dress-up’ as a character from a book. We will not be charging pupils to ‘dress-up’ but have asked pupils to rather make donations on Friday and the money raised for dressing up will be given to the library to purchase more books. Camps Bay High prefects will be taking the assembly on Friday and each grade in their ‘dress-up’ outfits will be asked to walk across the stage to ‘show off’ their book character outfits – it should be a fun day!

CAMPS BAY PRIMARY OPEN DAY: THURSDAY 23 APRIL 2009: An exciting Open Day programme has been organised for all prospective pupils and parents on Thursday 23 April 2009 from 08h30 – 10h30. Mrs Vivienne Ashcroft delivered invitations to all our feeder schools and we expect a large number of pupils, mainly prospective grade 1s, 2s and 3s for next year, accompanied by their parents, to visit the school. Mr De Korte (Principal of the High School) and Mrs Nancy Roussopoulos (Principal of the Preparatory School) will also be attending the Open Day.

MERIT AWARDS: Congratulations to the following pupils, each of whom was presented with a merit award at our assembly last week. We are proud of each one of you and would like to encourage you all to continue doing your best at all times.
