Inter-house Athletics

Dear Parent(s) / Guardian(s)

Thank you to those parents that attended the information meeting on Tuesday evening. I hope it was informative and that the term 1 calendar received will assist you with your planning and organisation. Thank you for your support at the meeting and it was great to feel the Camps Bay Primary spirit among our parents! Parents who did not attend the meeting may collect a term 1 calendar from Reception.

Welcome to the two student teachers from UCT, namely, Ms Ashley Corns and Ms Lauren Morgan (ex Camps Bay High pupil), who are presently doing their teaching practical at Camps Bay Primary before resuming their studies to qualify as Intermediate Phase teachers in 2010.

The academic programme is now in full swing and a reminder of the weekly Maths revision tests on Fridays! By the end of this week you should have received an Assessment Timetable from your child’s class teacher of the FORMAL assessments that will be taking place this term. If you have not received this Assessment Timetable from your child, please contact your child’s class teacher for a copy.

ASSEMBLY: FRIDAY 22 JANUARY 2010: There will not be a formal assembly this week as we have organised a guest speaker, Mr Achmat Hassiem, who was a victim of a shark attack and he will be addressing the school. By all accounts he is an exciting public speaker who turns his personal encounter into a positive story! It should be great and you are welcome to attend. Please be aware that there is no graphic visual material that could be disturbing for the children.

This week has been an exciting week on the sports front in that we were able to use the newly marked Athletics track on the Symmonds Field for the Inter-House Athletics Trials. All the teachers were present including Mrs Sally Smith, the new Athletics coach and all the children in each House were given the opportunity to participate in the Sprints, High Jump and Long Jump. It was a lot of fun and the pupils thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon, apart from the howling ‘Cape Doctor’ on Wednesday afternoon for Orange House!

The sports registration forms and extra-mural timetable for Term 1 of 2010 accompanies this newsletter. You are required to assist your child in making a selection as this involves a commitment for the duration of the term. The extra-mural programme for all sports commences on Monday 25 January 2010. It is our policy that every child participates in ONE summer and ONE winter sporting extra-mural activity. All children MUST participate and the teachers have been instructed to run a register and take roll call at practices as well as follow-up on absenteeism from sports practices. Please ensure that your child attends the practices.

INTER-HOUSE ATHLETICS: Next week Friday 29 January 2010 is the Inter-House Athletics (grades 3 to 7) that is held on the track at Camps Bay High School. Accompanied with this Newsletter is a letter providing you with further information. The Inter-House Athletics event is a fun and exciting day on the school calendar so please make an effort to attend. The event does include a keenly contested race for Moms and Dads! (grades 1 and 2 will have their Athletics event with the preparatory school)

ATHLETICS: As an Athletics track has been marked on the Symmonds fields in preparation for training this term. Mrs Sally Smith, a Physical Education teacher and an Athletics coach has been employed to coach Athletics, this season. Athletics is a multi-disciplinary sport and we need assistance with the coaching of High Jump, Long Jump and Hurdles. If there are any parents who would like to assist, particularly during the next three weeks, in preparation for the Inter-Schools event, please contact Mrs Hamber at 021-438 1503.

WE NEED YOU! Make sure you are part of the Camps Bay family! Julie and Carol are looking forward to a huge turnout of parents at the meeting!

AFRIKAANS IS FUN! Afrikaans has been identified as a weakness at Camps Bay Primary and we have put a number of strategies in place in an effort to strengthen Afrikaans in the classroom. However, we have had an offer from an Afrikaans teacher, Mrs Bernita Lombard, who is willing to offer conversational Afrikaans classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5 to 6.30pm. Mrs Lombard assures me that the Afrikaans lessons are exciting and fun! The cost of the lessons is R110 each and will be in the Kumon room at Camps Bay Primary. You will be receiving a flyer with next week’s newsletter providing you with more details. The lessons are scheduled to start on Monday 15 February 2010.

SECOND-HAND CLOTHING: Please note we are in the process of starting a second-hand clothing shop and we will endeavour to keep you informed of any developments. Should you have any second-hand clothing requirements prior to the opening of the shop, please contact Carol Bysshe on 072 200 2691.

PERSONAL INFORMATION FORM: You should have already received a form on which you are requested to complete some personal information. Please complete this as a matter of urgency and return it to school by Friday 15 January 2010. Please assist us in this regard to avoid any potential difficult situations.

SCHOOL FEES FORMS: You should have already received a “Preferred Payment Method” form on which you are requested to indicate your method of school fees payment. Please complete and return this document to school also by Friday 15 January 2010.

Any pupil reporting after 07:55 must be accompanied by a parent and report to the office – pupils will then receive a ‘Late Slip’.

COLLECTION OF PUPILS: All pupils must be collected by parents by 14:30, unless they are attending an official school extra-mural activity which commences at 14:30. In this case, they are to be collected by 15:45. No pupils may play on the playground after school without supervision. They will be expected to report to Aftercare on a “casual basis” and will be charged accordingly.

GRADE 1’s & 2’s PUNCTUALITY and AFTERCARE: To avoid unnecessary disruption of class time as well as anxiety in our little ones it is essential for all children to be brought to school on time and collected promptly. A child who is left waiting after the other children have gone may become very distressed and believe that she/he has been forgotten. If you are unavoidably delayed please phone the school so that we can reassure your child. Your child will then be placed in Aftercare and you will need to pay the Aftercare Managers the casual aftercare rate. All play arrangements should be made by the relevant adults the previous day, these arrangements may not be made through the office or staff but directly with the Grade 1 and 2 Aftercare Manager, Mrs Adri Baretta (Cell 083 265 2018).

AFTERCARE GRADES 4 to 7: This facility, privately run by Mrs Elaine Allen (Cell 082 720 7705), operates Monday to Friday from the close of school to 17:30. All pupils attending the aftercare facility have to register each afternoon with Elaine Allen. Pupils may only be in the Aftercare room or on the 5-a-side soccer court. No children may be anywhere else in the grounds. All Aftercare pupils will be collected from the Kinnoull Road gate at the back of the school. All aftercare children are expected to bring a change of clothing with them and change out of their uniform and into civvies for aftercare. Any pupils not collected by 14:40 will be sent to the Aftercare facility and parents charged the casual daily rate.

LUNCHES: Please ensure that you pack a healthy snack for your children for both ‘breaks’. Do not pack sweets, fizzy drinks etc. For those children who have afternoon extra-mural activities or who attend Aftercare, please consider packing them a mid-afternoon snack as well.

It is, however, essential that each and every pupil has a full complement of stationery from the start of the year. As in the past, Waltons have offered us the “pre-packed “Back-to-School” packs. Although each and every piece of stationery must be clearly labelled with your child’s name and grade, please delay the covering of the books until your child has been given the necessary instructions at the start of the year.
