The mornings are still rather chilly but it is certainly getting lighter and pupils and teachers are not arriving at school in the dark! Am I imagining it or is spring in the air? On Tuesday 1 September we will be having a Civvies Day to celebrate the arrival of spring. The cost of wearing civvies is R5 and the money will be sent to the Chaeli Campaign for disabled children. There is a national civvies day on the 4 September in aid of children with disabilities but Camps Bay Primary have decided to go ahead with the 1 September as our civvies day, as planned at the beginning of the term. The theme is ‘flower-power’ or bright colours. The grade 3’s will be planting a tree that will be their tree and they will be able to watch their tree grow until they leave in grade 7 to see how much it has grown in the years while they are at the primary school!
Apart from the Civvies Day, there are number of exciting events coming up in the next few weeks. Firstly, this Friday will be an assembly led by the grade 7’s and in next week Friday’s assembly wii (sic) have the exciting launch of the Duck-a-thon! WATCH THIS SPACE for more information! Carol Bysshe and Julie Friedman are going BIG!! This is our main fundraiser for the year – wii are behind in our fundraising this year and wii need ALL parents and families to be involved not just the core group of families that are always involved and supportive. This needs to be a TEAM effort if wii want to make Camps Bay Primary the best! The actual Duck-a-thon event is next term on Friday 9th and Saturday 10th October 2009.

GRADES 6 & 7 PLAYS:
Also lined up is the Grade 6 and 7 Plays on Tuesday 15th and Wednesday 16th September at 19h00 in the Bernie Segal Memorial Hall. The grade 6s and 7s are frantically rehearsing their plays and they are always a highlight on the school calendar. Make sure you diarise and attend the Camps Bay Primary Play on one of the nights. Tickets are R20 for children and R30 for adults.

SAFETY OF OUR CHILDREN
There have been a number of crime-related incidents in Camps Bay and in the ‘Little Glen’. You will have noticed that we now have an ADT Guard on duty from 6am to 6pm stationed mainly at the front entrance. The gentleman’s name is Hans and he has been screened by ADT. He is here at the school for a trial period until the end of the year. ADT have trained guards at a number of schools around the Peninsula. Although it is not the school’s responsibility to take care of children after they leave school in the afternoons, we are concerned for their safety. Please we strongly urge you as parents to not allow your child(ren) to walk in greenbelts after school and to be aware of their whereabouts once they leave school in the afternoons.
LATECOMING IN THE MORNING:
There is a steady stream of pupils arriving late every morning. Often it is the same pupils continuously arriving late. Please can you make an effort to get your child(ren) to school on time – we try and encourage pupils to be punctual as a life-skill. It is also disruptive to the class if pupils arrive late for class once lessons have started. We do need your assistance in this regard, however, the procedure for latecoming is as follows:
if late, pupil reports to Reception – pupil is issued with a late slip
2 late-slips = a demerit
3 demerits = a detention
If there is a valid reason for arriving late, please provide a note or a letter on the day and the child will not be issued with a demerit. Thank you for your support.

To Nicol Black who competed in the Western Province Rhythmic Gymnastics competition Level 2 Under 9 on Saturday, 22 August 2009 and came third in her age category.
To Mikaela Füscher who came third in the Western Province Rhythmic Gymnastics Championships (Level 4) this past weekend and will be representing South Africa in the National Championships in October. She will also be representing Western Province in the South African Figure Skating Championships.
SPORT:
It has been brought to my attention that a number of very good soccer players are not playing school soccer but are playing for the club. This is most disappointing as it is not supporting the school in our efforts to promote and build sport at the school. The sports policy at the school is that pupils are compelled to play ONE summer sport and ONE winter sport at the school. If pupils do not attend practices they are issued with a demerit and if they do attend a match they are placed in detention. Please ensure that your child attends all practices and matches.
SPORT RESULTS:
20 August the U9A soccer boys played a match against Herzlia Highlands and drew 0-0. Matthew Berman was “Man of the Match”. Thank you to the parents and Mr Collier for coming to support us.
20 August the U9B soccer boys played a match against Weizmann. Unfortunately we lost 2-0.
“Man of the Match” was Jonathan Scott.
Squash results: Camps Bay Primary won their match against SACS ‘B’ team by 3 matches to 1.
Dillon Pead won 3-0, Mujahid Londt won 3-0, Daniel Pelman lost 3-1 and Ryan Kearney won 3-0.

Social Networking: Parents Informative Evening

A number of the educators have been away ill this week but we have managed to use the services of Mrs Karakondis, Mrs Howell as well as teachers during their admin time to substitute teach in classes to ensure that effective teaching takes place. I am pleased to inform you that the pupil attendance at school has improved considerably and the absentee record is as per normal for this time of the year. However, the school is receiving a number of telephone calls from parents inquiring about measures taken by the school to combat the outbreak of the flu – this information did appear in the Newsletter 23/09 dated 6 August but for your further information: the governors and school management team enacted the following precautionary measures which have been in place since early August:
Pupils who show flu-like symptoms will be sent home and are not to return to school until they are fully recovered.
Anti-bacterial dry hand-wash (used in hospitals) in each classroom – teachers will ensure that this is used by all children at the start of the day and at the end of breaks.
Teachers will accompany classes to the bathroom for regular washing of hands during the course of the day. Soap has been placed in the bathrooms
A box of tissues in classrooms
Desk tops in the classrooms will be cleaned daily
Keyboards in the Computer Lab will also be cleaned regularly
Children are encouraged to cough / sneeze into a hand, sleeve or crook of the elbow.

MILES FOR SMILES TALK AT CBHS: On Friday, 21 August, The Atlantic District of the Scout Movement invite you to a hear a talk given by Braam Malherbe: adventurer, author and motivational speaker at Camps Bay High School hall. The talk starts at 19h00 and ends at 20h30. Braam Malherbe is a member of the ‘The Miles for Smiles’ foundation, an organisation that assists in raising funds for repairing childhood facial deformities, mainly cleft lips and cleft palates. Braam Malherbe & David Grier have run the entire length of the Great Wall of China the equivalent of running a marathon per day for 98 days, covering a distance of over 4, 200 kms. This was a world-first. The outstanding achievement of this challenge earned them the “Out There Adventurers of the Year 2006” award. The second challenge they undertook was running a 3300km “SMILE” round the coastline of Southern Africa from Namibia to Mozambique, a second world-first.

The school will benefit by receiving R50 per ton extra for recycling telephone directories! Please note these do need to be kept separate from other paper when you drop them off at the school.

MILES FOR SMILES TALK AT CBHS: On Friday, 21 August, The Atlantic District of the Scout Movement invite you to a hear a talk given by Braam Malherbe: adventurer, author and motivational speaker at Camps Bay High School hall. The talk starts at 19h00 and ends at 20h30. Braam Malherbe is a member of the ‘The Miles for Smiles’ foundation, an organisation that assists in raising funds for repairing childhood facial deformities, mainly cleft lips and cleft palates. Braam Malherbe & David Grier have run the entire length of the Great Wall of China the equivalent of running a marathon per day for 98 days, covering a distance of over 4, 200 kms. This was a world-first. The outstanding achievement of this challenge earned them the “Out There Adventurers of the Year 2006” award. The second challenge they undertook was running a 3300km “SMILE” round the coastline of Southern Africa from Namibia to Mozambique, a second world-first.

TELEPHONE DIRECTORY PAPER DRIVE: Mondi recycling is running a telephone directory paper drive from now until 5 December 2009. The school will benefit by receiving R50 per ton extra for recycling telephone directories! Please note these do need to be kept separate from other paper when you drop them off at the school.
GRADE 7 TUCK SHOP: There will be a tuckshop every Friday to raise funds for the Grade 7 Farewell. Please bring R5.00 or more for a bag of delicious snacks such as biltong, sweets, dried mango, peanuts, biscuits, droëwors and samoosas.
CAMPS BAY SWIMMING CLUB RAFFLE: The Club is running a raffle to raise money to improve the facilities at the club. Your support is appreciated. Cross-Country

I thought it would be an interesting exercise to benchmark the standard of Maths and Languages at Camps Bay Primary by analysing the grade 8 midyear exam results at the high school. The reason for this exercise is to assess our preparation of pupils for high school and also because I receive a number of queries from parents on the standard of Numeracy and Literacy at the school. I analysed the results of the Camps Bay Primary pupils from the grade 7 class of last year, presently in grade 8 at the high school, relative to the rest of the grade. I am pleased to inform you that the results of our pupils in grade 8 for Numeracy and Literacy are highly commendable.
Last year’s grade 7 class was quite a small class and only 31 pupils from the primary school went to the high school. There are at present 128 grade 8 pupils at the high school. Herewith follows the results:
MATHS (Numeracy)
Grade 8 average = 54,52%
CBPS pupils’ average = 62,1%
1 CBPS child achieved 90% +
5 CBPS children achieved 80% +
7 CBPS children achieved 70% +
4 CBPS children achieved 60% +
In effect 17 of the 31 children who attended CBPS last year achieved over 60% for Mathematics in the grade 8 high school midyear exam.
ENGLISH (Literacy)
Grade 8 average = 54,01%
CBPS pupils’ average = 61%
2 CBPS children achieved 80%+
8 CBPS children achieved 70%+
9 CBPS children achieved 60%+
In effect 19 children of the 31 who attended CBPS last year achieved over 60% for English in the grade 8 high school midyear exam
AFRIKAANS
Grade 8 average = 54,05%
CBPS pupils’ average = 53,7%
1 CBPS child achieved 80%+
3 CBPS children achieved 70%+
4 CBPS children achieved 60% +
7 CBPS children achieved 50%+
In effect 15 children of the 30 (one exempt) who attended CBPS last year achieved over 50% for Afrikaans in the grade 8 high school exam. There is room for improvement in this area but with Mrs Visagie (grade 7), Mr Ryklieff (grade 6) and Mrs Weldon (grade 5) who are all fluent in Afrikaans I anticipate an improvement in the level of Afrikaans teaching and preparation of CBPS pupils for high school in this subject. I must add that one cannot only rely on Afrikaans teaching in the classroom. As a language, Afrikaans needs to be spoken in your home for one hour per day or on one day per week to facilitate any significant improvement. Children also need to be encouraged to read Afrikaans books or magazines. It needs to be a team effort!
STAR MATHS OLYMPIAD
12 300 pupils from the Western Cape entered the Star Maths Olympiad.
I would again like to take this opportunity to commend the 12 learners who succeeded in attaining a position in the Top-200 in the Western Cape in the Olympiad. The medals and certificates were handed out at a prestigious prize-giving at the Baxter Theatre and the former Minister of Education, now Minister of Science and Technology, Ms Naledi Pandor was the guest-speaker.

INFLUENZA:
I would like to inform you that Camps Bay Primary does have one confirmed case of the H1N1 virus, however, there is no cause for alarm, as the child has been away from school as of Monday 3 August 2009. You should have received notification of this on our sms service on Tuesday. Please consult the previous newsletter for all the precautionary measures that we have taken to combat the flu at school. Please a further notification that if a child is suffering from an illness it is advisable for him or her to stay at home for 7 days after the start of the illness and only to return to school once he/she is fully recovered. Please adhere to this request, as we have had to send a number of children home who were showing flu-like symptoms. Children that are not ill MUST please attend school, as the teachers need to continue with teaching to complete the curriculum.
RAK (Random Acts of Kindness) WEEK:
Thank you for your generosity and ‘acts of kindness’. The boxes at Reception are full of items for the Christine Revell Home for children. The response has been amazing and Camps Bay Primary has definitely shown that it is ‘a school that cares’. We will be handing over your donations to a representative from the Christine Revell Home at assembly on Friday morning.

Kaliya Arumugam who competed in a Judo Tournament and won a gold medal in her weight division (under 33 kilograms) and a bronze in the next weight division up (under 39 kilograms) and was awarded WP Colours as a result. We are proud of you, Kaliya.
Cole Goldie who was placed 1st and .received a gold medal and WP Colours in the 30 & under weight division of the WP Judo Championships held at the German School on 1 August 2009.

TELEPHONE DIRECTORY PAPER DRIVE: Mondi recycling is running a telephone directory paper drive from now until 5 December 2009. The school will benefit by receiving R50 per ton extra for recycling telephone directories! Please note these do need to be kept separate from other paper when you drop them off at the school. We have received R1626.59 from Mondi Recycling for the month of July. Thank you for supporting us.

Influenza Procedures

Enclosed with the newsletter please find the following documents for your use and convenience:
Term 3 Calendar of Events (parents of grades 4 and 7 received this at the respective grade meetings).
Term 3 Winter Sports Fixture List. You should have received a letter, sent home yesterday, explaining the arrangements for the Cross-Country event taking place on Friday 7 August 2009. You should have also received an Assessment Timetable of tests, projects and assignments for term 3, which was issued to your child by their respective class teachers. Please ask for this Assessment Timetable from your child and if one is not forthcoming, please contact the respective class teacher to obtain a copy. You are encouraged to closely monitor this assessment timetable to ensure that your child completes all the tasks required timeously as well as prepares thoroughly for tests this term. In assembly on Friday I will be addressing the significance of National Women’s Day which is the public holiday on Monday 10 August 2009. We will also be entertained by the Camps Bay High School Music Department in the assembly.
INFLUENZA: A further precautionary notification: As I am sure you are aware there has been an outbreak of influenza in the country and there have also now been confirmed cases of H1N1 ‘swine’ flu at a number of schools in the Peninsula. At present we have had no confirmed cases of swine flu at Camps Bay Primary. Symptoms of H1N1 flu include a very high fever, vomiting, muscle pain amongst other symptoms. We would like to advise you that if your child is experiencing illness or flu-like symptoms to consult your doctor or visit your local health practitioner provider to have a check-up. If a child is suffering from an illness it is advisable for him or her to stay at home for 7 days after the start of the illness and only to return to school once he/she is fully recovered. I have asked the teachers to encourage pupils to practise respiratory hygiene by encouraging pupils to cough or sneeze into a tissue, hand or into the crook of the elbow as well as regular washing of hands. There is NO NEED FOR ALARM OR PANIC, however, the governors and school management team have decided on the following precautionary measures:
Pupils who show flu-like symptoms will be sent home and are not to return to school until they are fully recovered. Teachers will accompany classes to the bathroom for regular washing of hands during the course of the day. Soap has been placed in the bathrooms
Anti-bacterial dry hand-wash will be placed in each classroom. Teachers will ensure that this is used by ALL the children at the start of the day and at the end of breaks
A box of tissues in classrooms
Desk tops in the classrooms will be cleaned daily
Keyboards in the Computer Lab will also be cleaned regularly
Teachers have been requested to show leniency to pupils who are absent w.r.t. the missing of a test due dates for projects and assignments.
The Department of Education has sent a directive for procedures to follow in the event of a confirmed case of H1N1 swine flu but they have given the instruction that Principals may not close schools. One of the set procedures in the directive is to provide parent(s) / guardian(s) with information if there are any reported and confirmed cases, which I will do on our sms service.
RAK (Random Acts of Kindness) WEEK: The three schools are all this week running RAK Week at their respective schools. Camps Bay Primary has selected to ‘show kindness’ to the Christine Revel Children’s Home which is a home for 50 children abandoned, abused, orphaned and neglected children. The response has been a little slow and therefore I have decided to extend RAK Week to the end of next week, Friday 14 August 2009. Please donate generously and show that ‘we are the school that cares’! The following products are on the list of requirements: towels, nappies, bath soap, brooms, mops, baby lotion and baby oil, hair brushes, washing powder, toilet paper, bleach and Handy-Andy. We are running an Inter-house competition to see which house is the MOST CARING! Points will be allocated to the House that is the most caring. Pupils are requested to bring products to school and place them in their respective HOUSE BOXES at Reception.
Thank you to Carol Bysshe and Moms for organising cakes and refreshments for the local Camps Bay police station on Wednesday morning. A group of grade 4 and 7 pupils, on behalf of Camps Bay Primary, delivered the cakes to the police station to show our appreciation as a school for the thankless task which the police do, providing safety and security for the community. I believe a number of our pupils were locked up in the cells and were transported back to school in the back of the police van with lights flashing!!
CROSS-COUNTRY: FRIDAY 7 AUGUST 2009: Please consult the letter handed out on Wednesday for full details. Camps Bay Primary will be holding the annual Inter-house Cross-Country event on Friday 7 August 2009. The entire school, pupils accompanied by class teachers, will be WALKING from Camps Bay Primary, departing at 10h00, to the high school. (Lifts are no longer required) The Cross-Country event is a fun event in which all pupils are expected to participate, either to run or walk the 2km course, and it will take place from 11h30 to 13h00. Please collect your child from the high school at 13h00 on Friday afternoon. The After-care children will be transported back to the primary school after the event.
SWIMMING: Please note there will be no swimming this Friday due to the cross-country.
STEELBAND: There will be no Steelband on Friday after school due to the cross-country but a practice will take place at 08:50 during the school day.
READ-A-THON: As reported in the previous newsletter, a phenomenal R30 000 was raised from the Read-a-thon fundraiser. POLICY FOR SELECTION OF TEAMS:
A decision was taken by the governors and the school management team on the selection of teams to play matches as follows:
If Camps Bay Primary is able to field two teams for a sport in a particular age-group, the A-team will be selected ON MERIT and for the B-team all players will be given an opportunity to play on a rotational basis. If Camps Bay Primary can only field one team for a sport in a particular age-group, the team which is automatically then the A-team, will also be selected ON MERIT. Players that are not selected are encouraged to practise and strive to improve to gain selection for the team. This is standard practice in sport and at most schools. Players who do not attend practices, irrespective of their abilities, will not be selected for matches. While our approach is to encourage participation, we need to select a team of players that can be competitive when playing against other teams from other schools.
SWIMMING: Please note that Wendy Way will be away for SA champs from Thursday 6 August until Tuesday 11 August. Early morning swimming will still be taking place with Wendy Hartog.

CROSS-COUNTRY: FRIDAY 7 AUGUST 2009: Please consult the letter handed out on Wednesday for full details. Camps Bay Primary will be holding the annual Inter-house Cross-Country event on Friday 7 August 2009. The entire school, pupils accompanied by class teachers, will be WALKING from Camps Bay Primary, departing at 10h00, to the high school. (Lifts are no longer required) The Cross-Country event is a fun event in which all pupils are expected to participate, either to run or walk the 2km course, and it will take place from 11h30 to 13h00. Please collect your child from the high school at 13h00 on Friday afternoon. The After-care children will be transported back to the primary school after the event.
SWIMMING: Please note there will be no swimming this Friday due to the cross-country.
STEELBAND: There will be no Steelband on Friday after school due to the cross-country but a practice will take place at 08:50 during the school day.
READ-A-THON: As reported in the previous newsletter, a phenomenal R30 000 was raised from the Read-a-thon fundraiser. Thank you again to all those wonderful readers and parents, grandparents and friends who sponsored our children in their reading over the holiday period. JUNIOR MUSIC CONCERT: Music pupils from Grade 3 – 5 will entertain us with their developing work on Wednesday, 19 August at 18:30 in the Bernard F. Segal Memorial Hall at the primary school. The concert is expected to last approximately an hour.
SPORT:
POLICY FOR SELECTION OF TEAMS:
A decision was taken by the governors and the school management team on the selection of teams to play matches as follows:
If Camps Bay Primary is able to field two teams for a sport in a particular age-group, the A-team will be selected ON MERIT and for the B-team all players will be given an opportunity to play on a rotational basis. If Camps Bay Primary can only field one team for a sport in a particular age-group, the team which is automatically then the A-team, will also be selected ON MERIT. Players that are not selected are encouraged to practise and strive to improve to gain selection for the team. This is standard practice in sport and at most schools. Players who do not attend practices, irrespective of their abilities, will not be selected for matches. While our approach is to encourage participation, we need to select a team of players that can be competitive when playing against other teams from other schools.
SWIMMING: Please note that Wendy Way will be away for SA champs from Thursday 6 August until Tuesday 11 August. Early morning swimming will still be taking place with Wendy Hartog.

TELEPHONE DIRECTORY PAPER DRIVE: Mondi recycling is running a telephone directory paper drive from now until 5 December 2009. The school will benefit by receiving R50 per ton extra for recycling telephone directories! Please note these do need to be kept separate from other paper when you drop them off at the school. We have received R1626.59 from Mondi Recycling for the month of July. Thank you for supporting us.
GRADE 5 CAKE SALE: The Grade 5’s raised R1646 from their cake sale last Thursday! Well done and thank you to all those parents who sent in yummy goodies.
GRADE 7 TUCK SHOP: There will be no Grade 7 Tuck shop this week due to the cross-country.
CAMPS BAY SWIMMING CLUB RAFFLE: The Club is running a raffle to raise money to improve the facilities at the club. Your support is appreciated. Tickets are available at the Secretary’s office or from Wendy Way at the Swimming Club at a cost of R10 each. The prize is this beautiful extra-large teddy bear!
