Dear Parent(s) / Guardian(s)
I will be away on Thursday and Friday this week as I am attending a Principal’s Conference organised by SAPA (South African Principal’s Association). The conference is being held in Caledon and the theme of the seminar is ‘10 Traits of Highly Effective Principals’. Mrs Visagie will be Acting Principal in my absence.
The Derby Day turned out to be wonderful day in glorious sunshine. I have only had positive feedback and we will be definitely adding the Derby Day with Llandudno Primary as an annual event on our school calendar. The sport results are listed below but the fine spirit and camaraderie in which the Derby Day was conducted was the main aim of the event. Thank you to all who contributed to making the day a success. Special thanks to the PTA led by Sophia Mortakis, as well as to Carol Bysshe and Julie Friedman, assisted by the team of Dads who did the braaing, for organising the boerewors rolls. We are planning to have more of these events on the Symmonds field.

DUNKELD ROAD: As you are aware there is a lot of construction in Dunkeld Road at present, from road-works and pipes been laid to houses been renovated and rebuilt. Please I would like to make an appeal to all parents to please be careful and PATIENT when ‘dropping off’ or collecting your child/ children in the mornings and afternoons, but particularly in the mornings, as we have had a number of unpleasant incidents that have been a danger to the safety of our pupils. I have instructed the pupils that once they have been ‘dropped off’ at school they may not leave the premises of the school unless they have received permission from Mrs Visagie or me.
READ-A-THON: Congratulations, readers! We have raised a massive amount of R30 000 from the Read-a-thon fundraiser, breaking last year’s record of R20 000. This is an amazing amount! Well done to all the children as well as to the parents, grandparents and friends who sponsored our children in their reading over the holiday period. This money raised will be used to purchase more books for our library as well as will make a worthy contribution towards our Smart boards. A special thanks to Ms Susie Joubert for organising and co-ordinating the Read-a-thon. The names of the prize-winners will be printed in next week’s newsletter as the prize-winners are being announced in the assembly on Friday morning.
RANDOM ACTS OF KINDNESS WEEK: 3 – 7 AUGUST 2009: The three-schools will all be running RAK Week next week but each school has selected a specific institution to show kindness. Camps Bay Primary has selected the Christine Revel Children’s Home. It is a home for 50 children: abandoned, abused, orphaned and neglected children. Mrs Visagie will be launching RAK Week in the assembly on Friday. Please donate generously and show that ‘we are the school that cares’!
The following products are on the list of requirements:
Towels
Nappies and nappy pins
Bath soap
Brooms and mops
Baby lotion and baby oil
Hair brushes
Washing powder
Toilet paper
Bleach and Handy Andy
We will be running an Inter-house competition to see which house is the MOST CARING! Points will be allocated to the House that is the most caring! Pupils are requested to bring products to school and place them in their respective HOUSE BOXES that will be placed outside Reception.
As part of RAK Week the three-schools have also decided that we would like to show our appreciation to the local SAPS at the Camps Bay police-station. Camps Bay Prep will be donating plants to the police-station on Monday, Camps Bay Primary will be providing cake and tea/refreshments to the police on Wednesday and Camps Bay High will be providing cooldrinks on Friday! A number of our pupils will be delivering the cake and refreshments to the Camps Bay police-station on Wednesday. If you able to assist with this gesture of appreciation to the SAPS, please contact Carol Bysshe on 072 200 2691.
CROSS-COUNTRY: FRIDAY 7 AUGUST 2009: We will be holding our annual Combined Cross Country event on Friday 7 August 2009 from 11h30 to 13h00 at the high school. Mrs Weldon and Mrs Hamber are the co-ordinators of this event and you will be receiving a letter informing you of all the details and requesting assistance with transport. We still require a number of volunteer marshalls to ensure the safety of our runners in this event. Should you be able to assist please contact the office as soon as possible. Thank you.

First Newsletter Term 3
Welcome back to term 3. I hope that those of you that had the opportunity to go on vacation, either overseas or on a local holiday, had a wonderful experience. To those of you that stayed in Cape Town, I hope you survived the ‘Cape of Storms’ and particularly the floods in Camps Bay!
STAFFING: A warm welcome to Mr Ryklieff, a new member of the teaching staff, who has been appointed as the grade 6 educator at Camps Bay Primary. As stated in the previous newsletter, Mr Ryklieff is an experienced teacher with 14 years in the profession. He has already started setting high standards and strict parameters in his classroom. As a former Head of Department, Mr Ryklieff has been involved in a wide range of areas in school life and he is also an enthusiastic Art teacher. He will also be assisting with the coaching of soccer this term.
NEW PUPILS: We would also like to welcome three new pupils to our school, Brandon Filmer in grade 3, Madeleine Magner in grade 6 and Yousuf Karodia in grade 7. All three pupils are wonderful young pupils who come to Camps Bay Primary with glowing reports and we hope they will have a happy and successful stay at our school.
PROJECTS: During the holidays a number of projects were completed. I am pleased to inform you that two Smart boards were installed in the Grade 7 classes. Mrs Hamber and Mrs Visagie have already started experimenting, with the help of the pupils, to use the Smart boards in their teaching practice. It is amazing how the children of today are able to operate technology without any prior experience! We hope that this is the first of many Smart boards as ultimately we would like to have a Smart board in every classroom!
Another project which is on the verge of completion is the upgrade of the bathrooms and toilets. The bathrooms in the school have all been painted in a new set of bright and funky colours. Mirrors have been replaced and we now have to add the finishing touches such as placing the new bins in the bathrooms as well as hang the children’s artworks on the walls to complete the project. A BIG thank you to Jo Springthorpe and Mariella Broccheto for managing this project so efficiently and making it happen!
Well done and thank you, Jo and Mariella.
We also arranged for the installation of the four benches on the perimeter of the Netball court for use by the pupils to sit and eat their lunches at breaks as well as for use by spectators at Netball matches. It does make a difference and creates a positive impression for visitors. Thank you again to the families that made the generous donation of a bench – we will be arranging the plaques in due course.
INFLUENZA: Just a precautionary notification and NO CAUSE FOR PANIC. Many families have travelled abroad during the holidays and with the re-opening of schools often schools are hit by seasonal flu outbreaks. Recently there was an outbreak of H1N1 at a private school in Gauteng and as a precautionary measure we would like to advise parents to be aware of these symptoms. Symptoms of H1N1 include a very high fever, vomiting and muscle pain amongst other symptoms. We would advise that if your child is experiencing illness or such flu-like symptoms to consult your doctor or visit your local healthcare provider to have a check-up. If a child is suffering from a respiratory disease it is advisable for him or her to stay home for 7 days after the start of the illness. With respect to respiratory hygiene, we need to encourage our children to cough or sneeze into a tissue or hand/sleeve as well as regular washing of hands. PLEASE I WOULD LIKE TO RE-ITERATE THIS IS A PRECAUTIONARY NOTIFICATION and there is NO NEED FOR ALARM.
READ-A-THON: I do hope you encouraged your child to read during the holidays as well as encouraged sponsorship of your child’s reading. The impression I received in the opening assembly on Monday was that the pupils have participated with enthusiasm and have been reading extensively during the holidays. We are very fortunate to have such a wonderful ethos of reading by our pupils at Camps Bay Primary. As stated before, ‘high readers’ invariably end up being top of the class! The Read-a-thon will continue until the end of this week when all green forms and sponsorship money has to be handed in. Our goal is to surpass last year’s figure of R20 000 to purchase more books for our wonderful school library as well as make a contribution to the payment of our new Smart boards. Keep reading as there are wonderful prizes to be won!
R500 cash for the pupils who raised the most money
R500 gift voucher kindly donated by the Book Lounge for the pupil who has read the most pages
§ Chance to win one of three fabulous prizes in a luck draw for everyone who hands in a green form
WINTER SPORTS DERBY DAY: The Winter Sports Derby Day with Llandudno Primary is all set to take place on Saturday morning 25 July 2009. Hopefully the good weather holds out until Saturday! All the netball and soccer matches will take place on the Symmonds Field. The squash match will take place on Friday afternoon at the Camps Bay club courts. Enclosed you will find a letter providing you with all the details and a programme of the matches scheduled to be played. We will be playing as many teams as possible to play the teams that Llandudno Primary is able to field. The PTA Moms (and Dads) will be co-ordinating the sale of food and refreshments throughout the morning. Please contact Sophia Mortakis on 082 923 2517 or email sophia@polka.co.za if you able to assist at the Derby Day. We hope to create a typical Derby Day atmosphere and all parents and pupils are welcome. We would like all pupils to attend including those pupils who are not playing in matches – we need as many supporters to be present to show Llandudno Primary the spirit we have at Camps Bay Primary!
PARKING: Please be aware that we are expecting a large crowd of parents from both schools and parking may be a problem at the Symmonds Field – please make a plan or get there early. We have arranged for a Traffic Department official to be present but please be careful when crossing Camps Bay Drive.
GRADE 7 MEETING: There will be an important meeting for all parents of grade 7 pupils on Monday 27 July in the Bernie Segal Memorial Hall from 17h30 – 18h30. The purpose of the meeting is to inform you of the new pass requirements for grade 7 as well as discuss the progress of the grade 7 class this year. Mrs Visagie and Mrs Hamber will also be present and available to discuss your individual child’s progress thus far as well as their performance in the June exams.
RAK (Random Acts of Kindness) Week 3 to 7 August 2009: As you are aware Nelson Mandela celebrated his 91st birthday on Saturday 20 July and Mandela Day is now an international day of celebration. People were encouraged to give 67 minutes of community service on this day in honour of the 67 years that Nelson Mandela gave to the struggle for freedom to make South Africa a better place for all South Africans. Unfortunately this day did not fall in the school term calendar, however, I did briefly mention the above in the assembly on Monday and as part of ‘giving’ and making South Africa a better place we will be requesting food, cleaning materials and other items for small children for the Christine Revel Home in Hout Bay during RAK Week, which is from the 3 to 7 August 2009. We will keep you informed closer to the time of the specific items that are needed.
GRADE 3 – 2010 INTERVIEWS: This week, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday afternoons, we will be conducting the interviewing of the grade 2 applicants and their parent(s)/guardian(s) for positions in grade 3 next year. If you are aware of any prospective pupils for grade 3 or any other grades, please would you encourage them to contact Mrs Pat Readman to make application as soon as possible as classes are filling up fast.
MERIT AWARDS: Congratulations to the following pupils, each of whom was presented with a merit award at our assembly at the end of last term. We are proud of each one of you and would like to encourage you all to continue doing your best at all times.

SPORT:
Sports practices have already started this week in preparation for the Derby Day.
CROSS COUNTRY: Due to all the other sports on offer as well as the lack of interest, Cross Country training will no longer be taking place. The school is still part of the League and therefore the learners may still participate in races. Learners who wish to continue with Cross Country can get a fixture list from the office. Training and attending the races will be the responsibility of the learner and their parent(s) / guardian (s). However, we will be still having an Inter-House Cross-Country for all pupils which will take place at the high school on Friday 7 July 2009 from 11h30 to 13h00.
RUGBY: Rugby practices have been postponed indefinitely as Matthew Soekoe, the rugby coach, injured himself and he had to undergo surgery during the holidays.

DRAMA EISTEDDFOD: Congratulations to Sasha Meek who competed in the Drama Eisteddfod. She received a Diploma in the “Poetry (individual) 10 years” and the “Acted Story (group)” categories. Well done, Sasha!
We will keep the rugby players posted if we are able to find a replacement coach until such time as Matthew has recovered to resume coaching duties.
